“It is not what we bargained for,”
noted Pete Kennedy, who looked
much relieved that his months of hard
work for Fall Break were finally over
and had been successful. “But it’s a
start,” he added, “and we hope that
after reviewing next Fall’s break, the
four-day weekend that the Senate
originally proposed will be accepted
by the faculty and administration.”

the 4-day break eventually making its
way onto the Fall calendar.
According to one faculty member, the
possibility of the 3-day break being
extended to the 4-day break that the
Senate proposed is quite possible.

After reading last week's articles on
abortion, I feel the need to address the
issue from a woman's point of view. I
major problem I encounter when
faced with discussions of this issue is
sorting through the rhetoric that has
been interwoven into both arguments.
The movement which opposes the
legalization of abortion has adopted
the label, Pro-Life, on the premise
that the life of the pre-existing child
should be protected. This label, along
with the frequent use of words like
murder and genocide implies that
women who choose abortion as an
alternative to childbirth are anti-life.
This label fails to recognize that
women who seek abortions also have
a life to consider and suggests that the
woman has not considered the life -
and quality of life - that she could
offer a child.
James Bass spent a good portion of
his article in last week's Megaphone

Bar Association
condemns
apartheid
On Monday, the American Bar
Association voted to condemn the
system of apartied government in
South Africa. The Association also
encouraged US government action to
lower the boom on this discriminatory
policy of a nation with whom we have
relations.
The announcement came at a time
when the anti-apartied fever seems to
be at a pitch unrivaled in recent
years. Just last Saturday at an
International Track meet in England,
several spectators ran onto the track,
forcing South African world-class
runner Zola Budd off of the track and
out of the race in protest of her
government's racist policies.
In addition to these incidents,
Mayor Ed Koch of New York City
recently has encouraged all New York
banks to refrain from lending to
countries with apartied political
systems.

With a big splash, the black alien
protagonist drops into the Hudson
River and manages to reach the
banks of Ellis Island. Thus begins
John Sayles’s The Brother from
Another Planet. However, this initial
excitement is not sustained. Instead,
one sees one-and-a-half hours of
wandering through the streets of
Manhattan, sporadically interrupted
by a plot development. What one does
get from viewing the movie is time to
reflect upon the way American
society operates.
While the black alien - referred to
as Brother - wanders through
Harlem, the location of most of the
action, I recall the times I myself
have wandered through New York
City and all of the warnings I received
beforehand. I was warned not to get
lost, not to get into thebad’ parts of
town. Of course, this was mainly for
my own safety, but I believe that
there is more to it than that. I believe

The Senate had pushed hard for a
4-day break - a Thursday, Friday and
the weekend. On Tuesday, the
Faculty compromised the Senate
proposal and voted to allow a 3-day
break effective only for the Fall of
1985. Further Fall Breaks would be
subject to faculty approval pending
the success of the first one.
Cody Memorial Library has expanded
its hours of service on Fridays and
Saturdays for the remainder of the
Spring semester.
The change will become effective
this Friday, the 22nd. of February.
According to Jon D. Swartz,
Director of the Library, the changes
are being implemented at the request
of the Student Senate initially, and
subsequently by the University
Council.
For years, Cody Memorial has
locked its doors at 5pm on Fridays
and Saturdays, a policy which has
received ample criticism by students.-,
whose schedules require substantial
use of library facilities during the
weekends. One Junior notes about the
policy, “It's a good move. I, for
example, work during the week and
have very little time to go to the
library until the weekend. The
change is going to be an improve-
ment.”
