Not much happenin’ at the Sig house.
Our new Pre-Dusters are really shining up
the campus with their Sig shirts and
beautiful faces. Volleyball begins this week
and we’ve entered three teams (the most in
a while for Sigma). We’re preparing for our
formal which will be going down April 27th
during alumn weekend. I know I speak for
all of us when I say that we are looking for-
ward to this year’s Brown Symposium. The
time off from classes will be well spent stu-
dying hard for our mid-terms. Everybody
have a productive long weekend and be
happy.
The southern gentlemen of Kappa Alpha
Order would like to thank all who attended
our Backyard Party. It was quite a laid-
back and lazy afternoon. Tres “Truck”
Morris, by public demand, is now going to
minor in homemaking as he proved what a
great short order cook he really is.
Congratulations to Phi-Delt I basketball
team for their capturing of the basketball ti-
tle. We assure them that there will be
another fierce battle for the plate next year.
The annual Kappa Alpha Old South Ball
is going to be held on South Padre Island.
Plans are being made for fun in the sun on
the sand. Old South week starts March 25.

Hello once again from the Pike house.
The brothers are fired up after a great
showing at the Pi Kappa regional conven-
tion. We won five regional awards in-
cluding scholarship and Chapter excellence.
After the convention hype settled, we had
a very special Valentine’s Day which saw
the naming of six new little sisters: Amy
Hutchinson, Michelle Moore, Cyndy
Stanley. Rachel Merrill, Katie Grant,
Delma Lopez, and a honorary little sister
Julia Hull.
Having welcomed the new Sisters of the
Shield and Diamond, we turned around and
welcomed our parents. The Student Foun-
dation and alumni office receive our con-
gratulations and thanks for a well run
weekend. The drama department added a
nice touch with its excellent production of
Once Upon a Mattress.
On the social side, we would like to thank
the sisters of Delta Delta Delta for a great
turnout and a great time at our mixer last
week. The ADPi’s and DDD’s both worked
hard and pulled off a fantastic panhellenic
bash at Possum Creek last Friday. We had
a blast at these parties and look forward to
our mixer with the ZTA’s next week.
This week Benjamin Britten captures the
marquis and we plan to celebrate another
successful Brown Symposium with our
Pledge Class party Saturday night. The
1920’s style speakeasy will he hopping - so
girls and guests dress “twenties” style and
come early. It promises to be a blast!
Until next time...
Senior Challenge is in progress. Last
week the voting ballots were sent to all
May and December graduates. This
week the pledge cards were distributed
within the greek groups and mailed to
the independents. Please fill out the
voting ballots and pledge cards a.s.a.p.
and return. If by chance, you are a
May or December graduating senior
and have not received any information
on Senior Challenge then, please con-
tact me at 869-1265 or Jim Woodruff
at ext. 1477.
So far, it’s a close race between votes
for the chapel bell and park benches. It
looks like it’s going to be an exciting
Senior Challenge Project. To those
seniors who have not returned your
voting ballots or pledge cards...please
do so !!!
With all the graduating seniors sup-
port, participation and prompt returns
of cards we should have Senior
Challenge all wrapped up by-Spring
Break.
Remember, the goal that the Senior
committee has set is $1500. Please join
with your fellow classmates and sup-
port our Senior Project which will
leave our mark at SU.

The women of Delta Zeta hope that
everyone’s having a good time attending the
lectures of Brown Symposium, and good
luck to anyone who was trying to get on
TV.
We would like to thank everyone who
bought carnations for Valentine’s Day and
to congratulate everyone who got one. It
was a worthy cause, and we were proud to
present a check to the Gallaudet College for
the Deaf, our national philanthropy. Lori
Wingfield did a great job.
Thanks to the men of Kappa Alpha for a
great time at Derby Day.
All of us are disappearing to Houston
this weekend for our Province weekend,
where we’re planning on ransacking Aman-
da’s house. Thanks. Amanda, what a sport
you are. We just hope your parents are too.
We almost made it through volleyball in-
tramurals with a perfect score, but then we
had to go win our last game and ruin our
record. In badminton doubles, the Deneece
Lawrence-Martha DeLair team was simply
“awesome,” as one observer commented,
coming in second place. You’ll see them
again in the 1988 Olympics. Go team.
We’d like to congratulate Peggy Hailey
and Ruth Davis on surviving all the inter-
views and making SA and RA, respectively,
for next year’s staff. You’ll both be great of
course.
Oh, the joys of sisters, of hiding out in
their bathrooms when you don’t need to be
seen...
Everybody have a great weekend, and do
the world a big favor: burn a Care Bear this
week.
WORK WITH THE BEST!
The same spirit that drove me last
week to criticize is driving me this
week to praise the work being done by
members of our University for the
benefit of minority and international
students. First, I applaud Ben
Sherman’s attempt to make inter-
national students feel a little more at
ease at Southwestern by having a
very special evening for them. The
evening, unfortunately, was a flop
because of a misunderstanding and
lack of concern on the part of a
participant. However, I hope that
this negative and embarrassing
experience does not discourage Ben
Sherman from continuing to set up
programs with international students
in mind.
The second item that needs to be
commended is the Student Senate’s
resolution against racial discrimin-
ation. How ironic that the same
evening that I was criticizing the lack
of participation of the university
academic community in Black His-
tory Month activities, Southwestern’s
Student Senate was discussing a
resolution, introduced by its vice-
president, Kathy Dunn, in response to
an ugly incident that had taken place
some days earlier.
I am very pleased and proud of the
extremely positive steps that
members of Southwestern are taking
toward helping the university achieve
a truly multicultural educational
community.
