"To Grandmamma’s hquse," she replied.
“And where does Grandmamma live?” I asked.
"In South Korea,” she said. _ _
At that moment the mother returned. Obviously
pressed for time in making connection with her
next plane, she took the child in her arms, gathered
up the overnight bag, and hurried away.
So I didn’t get a chance to ask the little doll
whether her Grandmamma lived in an apartment
or an ordinary house. But this really was of no •
great significance.
What did matter was that this child was going
over the Pacific and far away to Grandmother's
house by jet. And in this case Grandmother lives
in a country that is still half slave and half free
because wehave not yet fully attained the goal
of peace on earth. /
No doubt the little doll's father is one of many
American GIs who have helped to maintain the
freedom of the half of Korea in which her Grand-
mamma lives. Which brings us to the point of our
story for today.
There will come a time—there HAS to come a
time if the human race itself is to survive—when
the peace on earth about which the angels sang
on that first Christmas Eve in Bethlehem is some-
thing more than a dream.
So let all of us who subscribe, to the Christian
faith rededicate ourselves this yuletide to the propo-
sition that Christmas SHOULD be over the hills,
or the oceans, to Grandmother’s house no matter
where in this world she may live.

The December issue of McCall’s magazine in-
cluded a cartoon that gave me a hearty.laugh. __
It depicted Lucy of the Peanuts comic strip stand-
ing in front of a door almost identical with the
one at the place where I live.
The caption read,' “Christmas is going over the
hills and far away to Grandmother’s house .only
she lives in an apartment now.”
There will be several persons of Lucy’s age and
younger who will be coming over the hills from
far away for a Christmas visit with the grand-
mother to whom I am married.
She also lives in an apartment now.
I thought of the cartoon with Lucy’s quip and of
the children who will be coming to my place this
Christmas while marking time in a busy air termi-
nal a few days ago.
1 This happened when I spied a little doll about
6 years of age dressed in blue leotards and a grey
coat. She was sitting obediently.and patiently atop
an overnight bag while a young'woman who ob-
viously was the child's mother talked to a man at
a ticket counter nearby.
The mother unquestionably was Oriental to the
nth degree. The little girl had the fragile beauty
that inevitably results when a female child is bom
of a marriage between an Oriental and a member
of the Caucasian race.
I couldn't resist the temptation to ask the child
where she and her mother were going all by
themselves. \ "
