AHS Soccer teams
start season tonight
The high school soccer starts
tonight for both Alvin High School
teams.
The Varsity Jackets open play
with the Brazoswood Tournament,
while the girls begin action at the La
Porte Tourney.
Both teams will be starting the
year under new coaches, as Graham
Hardy takes over for Rodney
Reviere, while Meta Sanford replaces
Ulrieke Reviere for the girls.
The varsity girls start playing at
home, Tuesday night against Sam
Raybum at 5:30 p.m., while the
boys' home opener is also Tuesday
vs. Galveston Ball at 7:30 p.m.
Davis' last ditch shot attempt trav-
eled short of the mark, did the Eagles
finally escape with a narrow 60-58
triumph, Tuesday night at Gym III.
"I think they (Willowridge) know
inside that they were very fortunate 9
to get out of here with a win," AHS H
Head Coach Rudy Carlin said fol- I
lowing the game. "We definitely had I
our chances at the end to pull the n
upset." 5
So how close did the Jackets
come?
Try leading for most of the game, 1
until late in the third period, while
the Eagles (4-0, 22-2) never held any
more than a six-point margin.

three-point attempt just nudge off
the front iron with less than a
minute remaining.
The Eagles’ Carlos Grace con-
verted only one of two attempts at
the charity stripe, before Ewing
blocked Vergus Davis' attempt for a
game-winning trey. Possession re-
turned to Alvin on the ensuing in-
bounds play, but Davis' shot fell
short, as time ran out
Alvin established the bewildering
trend (as far as the Eagles were
probably concerned) almost immedi-
ately, as Angie exploded for 15-first
quarter points, which played a piv-
otal role in a 20-18 lead after the
first eight minutes.
Willowridge countered with
Michael Ewing’s layup, climaxing a
16-8 second-quarter run to give the
Eagles their largest lead at 34-28.
Unfazed, though, AHS junior
Moses Herrera connected on a three-
point bomb, while Kris Pollio con-
verted a follow-up bucket to reclaim
the upper hand for Alvin.
Angie's jumper then completed a
13-5 spurt a few minutes later, giv-
ing the Jackets a 41-37 lead at in-
termission.
The lead grew as much as five in
the third period, but Leonard Free-
man's line toss eventually broke a
49-all tie with 2:11 left and Grace
followed with a turn-around attempt
to make it 52-49.
Alvin battled back to tie it with
Pollio (one) and Dennis Davis' (two)
charity stripe tosses, before Susay
connected on a follow shot to give
Willowridge a 54-52 advantage into
the fourth quarter.
The Jackets' next game will be
tonight at Brazoswood High School
in Lake Jackson at 8 p.m.
