first in our lives and everything else
will have to come second.
But let me tell you, sometimes it
is very difficult to do that. But,
somehow, with the grace of God,
we are determined to do just that,
no matter where it may lead us.
And if we continue to do that,
then God will continue to bless us.
Economic Development - who
could be against it? As our local
Executive Director of the Chamber
of Commerce said, "Any industry is
good for Alvin." I don't agree, and
it should be clearly stated this is
just my opinion and not the view
of any other business, group, or
association.

city. I feel I am most qualified to
help pilot Alvin through the next
phases of it's growth.
I have served the community in
many ways over the last 20 years. I
would like to list a few in this
article.
• Served three terms on the
Charter Review Committee.
• Past Chairman of the Planning
committee.
• Past Chairman of the Planning
and Zoning Committee.
• Two full terms as a member of
the Planning Committee.
• Board of Directors of the 100
: Brush arbors. Remember them?
: Well, I'm not all that old, but I
can remember going to one once or
twice when I was very young.
Some men had cut saplings and
made sort of a frame and then put
some brush on top. There were no
sides. And the light was furnished
by some sort of lamps hung up in
the tree limbs.
.The benches, now they were
really something else. As well as I
can remember, kegs or barrels were
placed around the arbor and then
planks were put across them. If you
think the pews in your church get
hard after about an hour, then
brother, you should have sat on
these.
There were no cushions and no
backs, and, certainly, there was no
air conditioning. You just prayed
that a breeze would come along, and
would, hopefully, blow away just
some of those mosquitoes and other
pesky bugs that abounded.
But, somehow the people who
attended the meetings back in those
days didn't seem to mind. Most of
them had never seen stained glass
windows and fancy buildings,
except maybe in pictures now and
then.
■They didn't come to church
meetings looking to see what
everyone else had to wear, or to
show off what they were wearing.
Most of them wore the same
things; clothing made out of flor
sacks.
There were no "Big I's and little
u’s."
And, most of them, if they had
eaten before church time had dined
on about the same thing also.
Biscuits, some kind of gravy, and if
they were lucky, maybe a little
piece of meat

days, pointing out the benefits of
voting for the proposal.
"When I explain to them that this
assessment is less than what we
were paying in city taxes and we
will see some results from it, they
agree it would be good for us."
Phillips said.
Don Lawson, owner of Almost
Heaven Campgrounds, shares
Phillips point of view.
"In essence is will be the same,"
said Lawson. "There's nothing in
this world that's free. You have to
pay for what you get."
The county has said it may take
up to five years to bring the roads
up to specs, but until then they
will be grated, patched as necessary
3; if you want to give to a worthwhile cause, you
inight want to consider donating your services,
money or your time to Alvin High School's Project
Graduation:
This group raises money all year long to help fund
the event which takes place for all high school
seniors after graduation ceremonies at the end of the
school year. Project Graduation serves as a safe way
to spending graduation night, instead of being
exposed to the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

drugs and alcohol.
The celebration is an all-night
drug-free and alcohol-free party
where school personnel and par-
ent volunteers are locked-in on
the AHS campus. No one is al-
lowed in or out until the festivi-
ties are over the following morn-
ing.
Many games and activities are
held during the celebration, and
several prizes are given away.
Ryan said that Wariner was
happy he could help donate to
such as worthy cause.
"Steve enjoys these type of
performances," he said. "He was
impressed with the support of the
program and he's glad that every-
one came out and enjoyed their
evening.
"I'm extremely pleased with the
turnout, especially since so many
of the kids brought their parents
and friends," Ryan added. "It was
a fun atmosphere for everyone
and it all was for a good cause."

When they came to church
meetings, they came with only one
purpose in mind, and that was to
worship their God.
And those country people had few
inhibitions when it came down to
telling their Lord how much they
loved Him.
They really didn't seem to care if
Uncle Jim or Aunt Sarah was
watching, they just praised their
Lord with all of their heart and
soul.
You're probably saying that was
a different time and day. And you
are right It was.
Back then they didn't have all the
things we do today clamoring for
our attention.
Just take a moment and think
about all the things in your daily
life that demand your attention. We
have all of our modem forms of
entertainment, including the
electronic forms, the social and
service organizations, and all kinds
of social events that Grandpa

largest chemical polluter in the
country and we are having difficulty
keeping Alvin a place where people
want to live. Take a look at where
the Doctors and Lawyers have built
their new homes in the last ten
years.
Alvin could and should be a truck
and rail distribution center for the
Texas Gulf Coast with the proper
planning and facilities. If we could
focus on building the long delayed
Alvin Freeway to Houston along
with upgrading the Alvin Loop we
would see Alvin once again become
an area of opportunity.
The City is at the point of
making critical decisions about the
future of the community and the old
downtown area. Mayor Dezso,
recognizing the need for this review
and study, appointed a downtown
committee in October, 1993.
Council Members are Andy
Erskine, Chairman, Noemi ‘
Moralas, Larry Townsend, and
Ethel Jane Moore. Representing the
Chamber is Marilyn Smith, The
Downtown Business Association,
Ron Roark, and the Museum
Society, Jean Vance.
This committee has great balance
and should be able to debate,
develop, and recommend an action
plan that will benefit the entire
community. Special interest groups
always asking for tax payer support
while at the same time asking for
tax concessions and abatements
remind me of the carpetbaggers of
an earlier era.
In my opinion the City should do
what is best for the future of the
community, not just fund the local
chamber. We are now forty years „
behind in highway and community
development with serious future
budget problems for the city,
school, and college.
If we are going to reverse
directions, it is time to get started
with open debate, fair consideration,
and positive action (coupled with
hard work) for the entire
community.
