resides in three easy steps But '
before I give you the three steps to
more TV, I should confess that I
omitted some of the Mustard
Clinic’s report. Here’s the part I left
out: “For every hour you watch
television, run three marathons to
stay healthy.”
Now, back to the three easy steps
to watching more TV.
1. Quit your job. By quitting
your job, you will be allotting a lot
of immediate time to further your
extensive TV-watching. However, a
question that needs to be asked is:
“How, since bills need to be paid
and family members need to be
supported, can I get cable?" Before
taking this first step, think long
and think hard about this question.
2. Join a Television Cult.
There are many respectable TV
cults around town. Due to recent
law provisions, only a handful of
them still sacrifice TV Guides or
people, so now is the perfect time
to join.
3. Have television screens
surgically placed on the inside
of your eyelids. The obvious
drawback to this step is that most
eye-screens don’t carry cable.
Consult your doctor.
Though I have no actual medical
or clinical knowledge, I feel these
three steps will help lead you to a
better life.
But just to be sure, I'm going to
the Ketchup Clinic for a
consultation.

Since returning to Alvin from
law school in the mid ‘70’s I have
noted many changes in the city.
The most disappointing is the
manner in which our residential
areas have been devastated by non-
conforming development.
Many of my contemporaries and
professional colleagues have moved
their residences from Alvin because
of this aesthetic destruction of our
neighborhoods. However, two years
ago when my wife Jo and I decided
to find a larger home, we elected to
stay here. This was based, in part,
on the decision of Alvinites and
their city officials to develop a
zoning plan which would reserve
our residential decay.
I think it is time to put that
change m action. We need to
approve the proposed zoning
ordinance at the Jan. 21 election.
I heard questions raised at the
public hearing about how much
zoning would cost if the zoning
ordinance provides protection for
prospective developers to develop
new subdivisions and build quality
homes, our tax base will expand
These new homeowners will share
the tax load. and zoning will more
than pay for itself Without this
protection, the growth we
experience may be more of a tax
burden rather than a help.
Many of my friends in Amarillo
could not understand why my
family would select a community
like Alvin when there were other
larger cities within driving distance
where we could make our home. I
let them know that I wanted to
work at Alvin Community College
and that we would live in Alvin by
choice I believe that Alvin can still
maintain and improve that quality
ol lile with controlled growth
When the improvements of
Highway 6 and FM 528 arc
complete, Alvin will grow Our
choice is whether the growth will
systematically planned or
haphazard. A good zoning ordinance
can protect property values and still
provide quality growth
Now the only question remains.
How can I, the average American,
watch more TV? That answer

In a general sense there arc four
purposes ol zoning They include
protection of the public’s 1 health;
2. safety 3 morals 4 general
welfare
Protection of the public health
refers to the provision of adequate
light and air attained through the
separation of structures and through
the regulation of population
density The control of traffic,
lessening of congestion in the
streets and provision of adequate
measures toward preventing fires,
panic, and other dangers, all come
within the area of zoning aimed at
protecting the public safety
The protection of public morals
is a nebulous area. It is generally
used as a basis for control of
sexually oriented businesses. The
provision used as a basis for control
ol sexually oriented businesses The
provision permitting the protection
ol public welfare is board in its
scope Aesthetic considerations are
usually supported from a public
welfare position, and it is here that
one usually finds the term
"preservation of neighborhood
character."—-
I urge all voters to consider that
zoning is about neighborhood
protection Zoning is about
safeguarding our city’s assets
Zoning is about increasing our per
capita evaluation rather than
decreasing it.
Please take into consideration
when you cast your vote on Jan 21
and vote YES on the zoning
ordinance. We will benefit from an
improved tax base, a more attractive
and orderly city, an the protection
of your assets (both commercial and
residential)

Katherine M. Chlamon, 20, of
Alvin was charged in connection
with a stereo face plate that was
reported stolen from a vehicle in the

She is only a suspect in the theft.
In the same issue, it should be
clarified that David Flores, 32, of
the 1500 block of South Beauregard
Street, was accused of sexually
assaulting a girl inside a garage
apartment The apartment is located
behind the girl’s grandmother's
home. Alvin police said the girl’s

the incident.
