what the next few years will bring.
Parents should usually plan to end
their instructional program before
their child enters puberty (the time
of rapid sexual development in early
adolescence). Puberty usually
begins between 10 and 12 years of
age for girls and between 12 and 14
fQr boys
Once this developmental period is
entered, teenagers are typically
embarrassed by discussion of sex
with their parents. Adolescents usu-
ally resent adult intrusion during
this time, preferring to have the
subject of sex ignored at home. We
should respect their wishes. We are
given but a single decade to provide
the proper understanding of human
sexuality; after that foundation has
been constructed, we can only serve
as resources to whom the child can
turn if he or she chooses.
Q. Several books for parents con-
tend that good sex education will
reduce the incidence of promiscuity
and sexual irresponsibility among
teenagers. Do you agree?
A. Of course not. Teenagers are
sexually better informed today than
at any time in human history,
although the traditional boy-girl
game seems to be as popular as
ever. The assumption that physio-
logical information will inhibit sex-
ual activity is about as foolish as
thinking an overweight glutton can
be helped by understanding the bio-
logic process of eating.
I am in favor of proper sex educa-
tion for other reasons-but I have no
illusions about its unique power to
instill responsibility in adolescents
Morality, if it is valued, must be
approached directly, rather than
through the back doors of anatomy
and physiology. Of much greater
potency is a lifelong demonstration
of morality by parents whose lives
reveal their fidelity and commitment
to one another.

The analogy to children has been
demonstrated empiricaly. During
the early days of the progressive
education movement, one enthu-
siastic theorist decided to take down
the chain-link fence that surrounded
the nursery school yard. He thoughtc
the children would feel more fre .
dom of movement without that vis-
ible barrier surrounding them.
When the fence was removed, how
ever, the boys and girls huddled near
the center of the play yard Not
only did they not wander away, they
didn't even venture to the edge of
the grounds.

ble unless he deliberately asks for
it. and as long as he stays within
the limits, there is freedom and
acceptance. If this is what is meant
by "democracy" in the home, then I
favor it. If it means the absence of
boundaries, then I am unalterably
opposed to it.
Q. We've been slow getting
around to sex education in our fami-
ly. In fact we haven't given our 11
year-old daughter any specific
instructions is there still time to
prepare her for adolescence?
A. Your situation is not ideal, of
course, but you should do your best
