subtle tip-off as to the inten-
tions of the senior senator from
Texas. It is written by Booth
Mooney, a Texas-born public
relations man who was for sev-
eral years on the senator’s
staff. It contains a foreword by
Lyndon Johnson himself. The
senator has insisted he is not
a candidate for president this
year, although he consented to
be a favorite son candidate in
order to get control of the Tex-
as delegation to the national
democratic convention. Appear-
ance of the book at this time
may be an indication that he
is hopeful the nomination may
be thrust upon him as a dark
horse, in the event of a stale-
mate at the national conven-
tion. Or it may be a long
range buildup for I960.
Whatever may be the moti-
vation behind the book, we
found it most interesting. Lt
struck home with us because
we are well acquainted with
both the author and his sub-
ject and also because we wit-
nessed or participated in some
of the events mentioned in the
story. The book is somewhat
sketchy and omits many de-
tails which would be of value
to one interested in the life of
Lyndon Johnson. But it does
hit the high points of his pub-
lic career. It emphasizes the
senator’s ability to get oppos-
ing factions together on cer-
tain issues and maintain th it
this has been the key to his
success as majority leader in
the Senate. The book charac-
terizes Johnson as a moderate,
belonging to neither the lib-
eral nor the conservative fringe,
but able to get along with both
factions.

As a usual thing, whenever
a politician’s biography ap-
pears in book form in a presi-
dential election year, chances
are he is an aspirant for the
presidency. Our bookcase is
pretty well filled with books
of this character. Some of the
politicians thus immortalized
in print made the grade. Some
did not. It took some four years
to get the nomination after
their biographies appeared.
Eisenhower was one of these.
