training with as much determination.
Wouldn’t succeed. Dempsey is one
of the great champions, only thirty-
two the twenty-fourth of June, an
exeeptionally eleau-living athlete. He
lent a fight last year, bat every triek
la the world wia used to keep him
from getting into ehape aad make
him lane. Dempaey may come back,
uzalnst Sharkey and then Tunney,
fighting aa well as he ever did be-

again.
Corbett Trained Hard
One ef the as champions who made a
heroic attempt to eame bark, aad failed,
waa Jim Corbett. Jim failed to get a re-
turn match with Bob Pitzalmmonn, who
knocked him out. Jeffries won the title
from Bob and Corbett fought Jeffries.
Corbett trained ten months for that
fight, and came back in groat condition
and with all the spend and skill ef hia
championship days. He eluded and out-
boxed Jeffries until the twenty-third
round, when big Jim ehased Corbett fur-
ieuely, comnered him and knocked him
raid. Exeept for having to fight the gi-
gantie and punch proof Jeffries, Corbett
might have been champion again Cor-
bett trained as hard for that match os'
Dempsey hao trained for Sharkey and
summer, made his 1927 debut in the
second game but was relieved in the
third inning after the Indians had
scored three runs. Swarts, who suc-
ceeded him, held Oklahoma City score-
less in the five and two-thirds innings
he pitched.
their veturn mateh.
Of the ex-ehampiona who turned their
training into daily exhibitions tor a
gate charge net one over eame back. The
old timers had sense, enough to da their
training for a big fight la private. with
very few privileged spectators. It should
be done that way. Pieking up a few dol-
lars in gate money doesn't make up for
allowing reprenentatives of the opposing
romp to spy out every move of the man •
training, find his weak spots sad tip off
the man he is going to fight. Dempaey
practically trained in private la hla
mountain eamp, for few people saw him
exeept the local visitors.
Jim Jeftries had the right idea. Ao
champion he did his real traininc off in
the mountains or behind locked doers,

Sometimes the ex-champlons who
“never came back.” didn't half try.
They weren't like Jack Dempaey.
Sometimes they tried hard enough,
aad their work la the ring chewed
that they were simply out of inch.
U Dempsey's case very likely It wiU
be the ether bird who's eat ef luck.
Bob Fitzsimmons was a champion who
trained just about the way Dempaey has
been training for throe montha past in
his determined effort to get back to Ute
peak of fighting condition. Dempsey
went to a mountain eamp, away from
the ballyhbo, the crowds, the eyes of
curiosity. He didn't train in the usual
way. He worked the way bio ploaeor an-
looters worked when they made homes
in ths wilderness. He built roads, rolled
rocks, cleared acres of .brush on the
mountain aides, eut down trees, dug holes
for fenco posts—everything that was
hard labor. Every morning he walked
and elimbed up the mountain trails, and
ran back to camp. He worked at high al-
titudes to improve his wind. He took
off fat and put on solid muscle- When
