Washington, Sept, s.—a move-
ment is under way in congress to
safeguard the freedom of the preas
by limiting the power of judges to
punieh the press through contempt of
Eurt procedure, the United Press
loomed today."
Tho movejs a direct outgrowth-of
tho contempt sentence recently im:
posed upon editora of the Cleveland
Press, a Scripps-Howard newspaper,
by Judge. Frederick Walther of the
court of common pleas of Cuyahoga
county, Ohio.
It is sponsored by Senator Arthur
H. Vandenberg, Republican, Michigan,
a former newspaper editor. Vanden-
berg revealed today he is making a
study of the legal phases of Aho
situation with a view to introducing
legislation in the regular session of
congress opening in December.
Vandenberg explained he is at-
tempting to work out ths situation
not only for the protection of the
press, but also for the protection of
the nation’s judicial system, which
he feels is endangered by autocratic
use of the contempt proceedings.
