Ardmore hands girls
fourth defeat, 56-27
Ardmore outscored Gainesville 33-10 in the first half and went on to
defeat the Lady Leopards 56-27.
Gainesville hit on just nine of its 52 field goal attempts (18 percent)
on the night as the Lady Leopards lost for the second straight time.
They begin District 5-AAAA play at home Friday night against
Justin Northwest.
“Ardmore is a very good, fundamentally-sound basketball team ”
said Gainesville head coach Jill Brown. “They are probably the best
we have seen and will see all year. ”
The loss comes one week after the Lady Leopards lost by nine
points to defending TAPS state finalist Sacred Heart. Gainesville
(7-4) had won three straight games before the Sacred Heart contest.
“We have had two very tough ball games coming off a three-week
break,” added Brown. “I told the girls it will not get any tougher
when we get into district. ”
Tammye Hammack and Kathy Colvin paced the Lady Leopards
with six points each.
“We could not get our inside game going, and we did not shoot well
at all from the outside,” Brown said. “Tammye scored the first time
down court, and then they (Ardmore) shut her off. When could not
get the ball in to her. ”
Ardmore, Oklahoma Class AAAA state champions a year ago are
ranked among the top girls’ teams north of the Red River. \
“They really pushed us with their guards,” Brown added. “They
have a very quick basketball team, the quickest we have seen all
year, and when they took away our inside game, we were in trouble. ”
Pennye Russell and Angie Webb finished with four points apiece.
Gurli Moore’s three points and two points from Sherry Fry and
Tamara Jones ended the Lady Leopards’ scoring.
Ardmore made it a two-game sweep Tuesday night with a 32-13
decision in the junior varsity contest. Vellena Cross and Sherry
Albers had all the scoring for Gainesville, finishing with seven and
six points respectively.
The Gainesville-Northwest doubleheader is set for 6 p.m. Friday.
