amination is necessary to make sure
that your general health is good and
that all organ systems are working ef-
ficiently. Dietary alterations may be
in order, although vitamin deficien-
cies are not a normal cause of body
odor.
In the second instance, the use of
bacteriocidal soap will help reduce
the population of normal skin bacte-
ria, thereby retarding bacterial ac-
tion on perspiration oils. Deodorants
can help but, by themselves, they are
usually insufficient.
Remember that the oils in sweat
are readily absorbed into fabric
where bacteria can break them down
and cause odor. These oils are often
extremely difficult to wash out of
clothing and, of course, the residuals
will become smelly when the materi-
als are repeatedly wetted, as with
sweating. Make sure that your clothes
are thoroughly washed and cleaned.
If these tips fail to solve the prob-
lem, see a dermatologist for further
advice. Unfortunately, as young men
and women mature through adoles-
cence, their perspiration may take on
an unpleasant odor. This is probably
due to the effects of hormones in the
body and, by the time adolescents are
fully developed, it usually disappears.

Ann Landers
Dear Ann Landers: Americans
are the biggest-hearted people in the
world. Also the biggest chumps.
Whenever a hard-luck story ap-
pears in the newspapers people rush
to send checks. Being sympathetic is
an admirable trait, but it’s appal-
ling the way folks send money
when they have no idea of how the
money will be spent.
Recently a Miami resident whose
7-year-old son needed a liver trans-
plant received nearly $700,000 from
strangers who had read about the
boy in the paper.
After the child died, the judge
held the woman in contempt of
court for refusing to make an
accounting of what she had done
with the contributions. She refused
to pay the balance of $262,000 on
her son’s medical bill, claiming that
the hospital failed to give him
adequate care. (The hospital au-
thorities vehemently denied this.)
It later became known that the
woman spent $200,000 on luxury
items including a diamond-sapphire
ring, a diamond-studded gold cross,
a diamond and gold bracelet and
an expensive watch.
Please, Ann, urge Mr. and Mrs.
Big-Hearted America to continue to
be generous, but to use a little
common sense. - J.E.L., LONG
ISLAND
DEAR LONG I.: Thanks for the
wake-up call, but I doubt that it
will help.
Americans are a generous people
and they lead with their hearts
instead of their heads.
For those who have money to
spare I recommend legitimate chari-
ties, of which there are many, but I
certainly can understand the desire
to respond to a specific case that
