Fender-benders keep city police busy

The Chairman of the State Demo-
cratic Party ripped Republicans for
what he termed a “campaign of dis-
tortion” and said that the Dukakis/
Bentsen ticket still has a chance to
win in this state.
Bob Slagle, an attorney who prac-
tices in Sherman, visited with
Democratic officeholders in the
Cooke County Courthouse Monday
morning, urging them to get out the
Democratic vote here.
On an almost non -stop tour of the
state, Slagle is hitting counties close
to home so he can be back in Sher-
man for a courthouse rally with Sen.
Lloyd Bentsen at noon Tuesday.
“This is still a winnable campaign
for us,” said Slagle. He said a poll
recently published in the Fort
Worth Star Telegram showing the
Bush/Quayle ticket with a 21 per-
cent lead in Texas is just flat wrong.
He said Democrats have their own
polls, which indicate a much tighter
race. “It (the Star Telegram poll) is
not just slightly at variance, it’s
greatly at variance, ” Slagle said.
“We had a period where we were
down 14 points in the polls, but
we’ve never had a period where we
were down 21 points, and we don’t
have that now. In another campaign
we’ve run polling that shows a great
deal ofclosing.
“Among white voters in a poll
done about the middle of last week,
we’ve found 6 percent of the white
males have moved to us and they’ve
moved directly from Bush. Among
white females we have moved up 9
points and 7 points came directly
from Bush and 2 points came from
the undecided.
“Our polls reflect that where we
are is about 7 points down but with
movement toward us. We have
spent a whole lot money for a elab-
orate get-out-the-vote system to
make sure we get our Democratic
votes out.
