SITUATION SERIOUS—Lake Texoma water official stands at the normal level of the lake, now
at its lowest level in history. US engineers estimate it will take 3,078 acre feet to bring the
lake back to normal. Turbines at the dam, now generating* 75,000 kilowat amperes of electricity,
will have to be shut down if the lake sinks 12 more feet. (NEA Telephoto).

throughout portions of the West
and Southwest—said the 1953 run-
off of water from melting snow in
the Colorado mountains was ex-
pected to be' less than normal.
In addition to light snowfall this
winter, the situation has been ag-
gravated by abnormally high tem-
peratures in the Rocky Mountains
for the past three weeks and dry-
ing winds which did much to de-
plete the soil moisture of the
watersheds. Following is a sum-
mary of the outlook for stream
flow of four of the major streams -
originating in Colorado mentioned
in the report:
North Platte—Snow accumula-
tion to Feb. 1 is about 75 per cent
of normal and slightly less than
other areas. Inflow into principal
reservoirs is expected to be about
60 per cent of the 10-year average.
. South Plate—A large section of
the South Platte irrigated area
will be short of water this season
uhlessthe supply outlook improves
materially during the next two or
three months. Runoff expected to
to reach only TO per cent of 10-
iyear ave ra g e flow—even with
near-normal precipitation for the
remainder of the water year.
Arkansas-Water supply pros-
pects lowest in seve r a 1 years.
Stream flow is well below normal
and no irrigation water storage re-
ported except for Twin Lakes res-
ervoirs near Leadville, Colo., ap-
proximately at the river's source.
Klu Oiande—Snow neoumulation -
on the Rio Grande drainage is
slightly less than normal but moun-
tain soil moisture conditions over
the upper drainage area -are bet-
ter than a year ago. Present pros-
pects for 75 per cent of average
