tion District, based on the engi-
neering specifications of the Soil ,
Conservation Service at Brenham.
Most of these ponds, and addi-
tional numbers, were built with
federal coat sharing under the
erleultur! Conservation Pro-
gram. Relatively few farm ponds
had been built before farmers
could avail tihemselves of the free
technical SCS assistance and of
the AGP cost sharing at approxi-
mately half of the ormal coat of
dam construction. »
An important function of the
stock ponds is also to bring a-
bout a better, distribution of .the
water supplyon farm and ranch
natures, end to enable the cat-
tleman to rotate the grazing be-
tween several pastures. Each
needs to have a separate water
supply-or have access to a com-
mon source, suck as stock ponds.
We now find that 56 per cent
of the cattle owners in Washing-
ton County have stock ponds and
that they average more than one
nond. For Washington County the
figure is 18 ponds ver reporting
farm (Census 1954). The state av.
erage is 2 1-2 ponds ponds per
farm or ranch, with ponds as a
water source. This figure. and
the propprtion of stork far m.
vh ponds varies widely over
in Austin County, which has
more springs and water courses
than Washington County, only
47 per cen or the cattle farmers
have stock ponds and thev have
1.6 ponds per firm. Many of these
are natural ponds. located In de-
pressions.
We estimate for Washington
County that eventually 85 per
cent of the livestock farmers will
have stock ponds and that there
la a tqta) need of 3850 todk
ponds in th county. Accordig
to this, the construction of ponds
is now about 69 per cent com-
pleted ni Washington County.
