Eisenhower may cast on legislation which the Democratic majorities
might be able to agree on. ‘ , - »
Eisenhower administration leaders have dropped hints of half a
dozen more vetoes in sight. They are predicted if the Democrats try
to force through bills that call for spending more than Republican
recommendations on housing, aid to depressed areas, airport and
highway construction, stream pollution prevention, new water re-
sources developments and other public works projects.

CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE of this Democratic squeeze are its
leaders. Speaker Sam Rayburn and Sen. Lyndon Johnson.
When they try to exercise their leadership, they are called despots.
But when they let the Democratic members of Senate and House
exercise their individuality, the leaders are. accused of having no
program and no policy. *
Some Republican congressmen have a theory—which they can’t
prove—that this undisciplined Democratic lack of action is a deliber-
ate stall to delay’consideration of civil rights legislation.
By taking up so much time on the nomination of Admiral Lewis
Strauss as Secretary of Commerce and by threatening filibuster^ to
prevent his confirmation, Senate Democrats are preventing action
. on- more important measures.
In the House, the slowdowns in committees on labor, educational
and other bills are having the same effect

Outdoor Living
“You don’t have to go to the Rockies to enjoy
outdoor ‘living these days. Just fire up tHte old Bar-
B-Q pit or barrel and whet your neighbor’s appe--
tite"—a friend of mine said the other day.
He's right, too. Especially now that everyone
has a telephone easily accessible to these backyard
paradises. They save many a running trip -to’ the
phone. Some wise subscribers even have outdoor
jacks and telephones in their favorite* colors on
their patios.
You, too, can enjoy the outdoors more this way.
Just call the telephone business office here in

Two hundred and twenty-three Before washing be sure to dis-
Ezra Benson's hands They're skittish about risking a showdown
on other vetoes. x
The result is a kind of legislative stalemate, with little attempted
and less done. Senate committees have reported out 734 measures
for floor action this year. House committees have reported out 386.
- All this out of over 10,600 measures inffoduced. But only 37 bills
have cleared both houses and been signed into law.
The stalemate centers around the fact that the Democrats are
instinctively opposed to anything the Eisenhower administration
proposes. And the Republicans seems determined to keep the
Democrats from putting through a counterprogram of their own.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that neither party
can deliver its votes in a solid bloc. For there is no punishment
that party leaders can hand out to their colleagues who stray.
The Republicans have a tighter organization than the Democrats.
It is smaller, therefore easier to control. But GOP liberals fre-
quently stray away from the leadership of Sen. Everett Dirksen
and Rep. Charlie Halleck.
Beyond the Democrats’ broad policy of opposing almost every-
thing suggested by President Eisenhower, they are split down the
middle on theif own program. Conservative Democrats vote with
Republicans against Democratic liberals just enough to Drevent
. anything being done by either side.

DALLAS (UPD)—Texas and Pa-
cific agricultural agent C. B.
Senter said today Texas farmers
have less to cmplain about than
usual.
Field crop planting and re-
planting in the ara served by the
railroad showed good progress
during May, Senter said in the
monthly T&P crop report.
Showers and rains fell over the
entire railroad system in Texas
and Louisiana, the report said
Some were accompanied by dam-
aging hail and wind, but re-plant-
ing is under way.
Prospects are favorable for a
good stand of cotton during June,
despite considerable re-planting
in storm-damaged West Texas
areas.
Texas will have 6,843,249 acres
in its cotton allotment for 1959
the report noted.
Rains 'during Mav also gave
more promise to the peanut crop
along the TAP route, Senter said.
He pointed out that only eight ovt
of the 35 Texas counties the rail-
road -serves have ■ allotments of
more than 1000 acres of peanuts

table crops in Texas are produc-
Plan Improvements
Ireland said his group plans to j
place curb and gutter and pave the
streets in the subdivision, at its
own cost. He said his group is will-
ing to pay for the sewer lines, with
the understanding that the city will
reimburse the corporation propor-
tionately as each lot is sold and
developed.
Approximately 250 lots will be
available in the area, but plans
call for sewerage facilities, includ-
ing a lift station, capable of tak-
ing care of a much greater part
of the highway* loop area. There
was some discussion as to wheth-
er the city should bear a part of
the cost of the lift station, but no
agreement was reached, due to the
annexation discussion.
Ireland said that if the city is
unable or unwilling to annex the
area, then it will be necessary to
form a water district. put the im-
provements under bonds, and have
the City of Brenham assume the
bonds whenever it does annex the
area.

The first step is brushing off all
surface dust. 'Use the dusting
brush of your vacuum cleaner or
1 clean soft cloth for this job.
Once the dust is all off, whip up
a suds in the bathtub or laundry
tub. Use water and a mild syn-
thetic detergent which should be
Completely dissolved.
Place the entire blind in .the
suds and brush gently with a soft
brush or cloth. Work fast. Rinse
fast also, using clear lukewarm
water. Two or more rinsings may
be needed.
Dry the slats with a soft cloth,
then hang the blind up at the win-
dow,so the tapes can dry. While it
is drying, the blind should be ex-
tended all the way down. Give
the tapes a good stretch. When
the tapes are completely dry, ap-
ply a thin coat of liquid wax to
the slats. The wax will prevent
dust from sticking to the shade
quite so readily. And when the
slats are dusted, . they will be
cleaner.
Speed is especially important if
the slats are made of wood. If the
wood soaks up water, it may warp
or the paint may peel. Handle
your Venetian blinds with care so
that no paint is chipped from the
slat. -
Protect Rugs, Carpets
Thorough cleaning and correct
spray treatment will protect car-
pets and rugs from clothes moths
and carpet battles.
Regular care with the vacuum
cleaner is the first step. It pre-
vents dust, lint and hair hom ac-
cumulating and offering extra food
for the pests. It can also remove
the insects themselves and their
eggs. These usually feed under
heavy furniture where it is diffi-'
cult to clean. Rotate rugs and car-
pets occasionally to make sure all

Busy Telephones
With schvol out for the summer, telephones in
many houses will probably be getting a real work-
out.
Therenl be calls from the children’s friends at
most any hour of the day—to round up the group
for a game, to arrange to meet at the rovies, or
to compare notes on a new bike or the latest record
album.
Whatever the call, the telephone is always there
to help teenagers—and small fry, too-- have more
fun during vacation.
If you have children whose friends keep the
phone ringing at a merry dip, make it easy for
your youngsters to answer without running through
the house. Extension telephones will do the trick
