Azaleas, camellias and gardenias should be planted in a partially shaded area that is protected
from the wind. The ideal planting mix is a combination of ferti-lome Potting Soil or peat
moss (75 %) and sandy loam (25 %). The shallow-rooted plants should be mulched to a depth
of 3-6 inches. In clay soils, they should be planted in raised beds. The use of ferti-lome Root
Stimulator and Starter Solution will greatly reduce transplant shock and encourage your
plants to resume their normal growing habits more quickly. Consult the planting guide on page
19 for specific planting methods.

Continue watering new plantings with ferti-lome Root Stimulator and Starter Solution
until they are well-established. How often you water will depend upon local soil conditions
and weather. Saturate the soil thoroughly each time you water. Water again when soil becomes
slightly dry, but don’t allow plants to wilt. In alkaline soils, use ferti-lome Soil Acidifier Plus
Iron several times a year to promote acidic soil conditions. Avoid spraying water on foliage, ; m ,
as this encourages disease problems.

Fertilize monthly during the growing season with ferti-lome Azalea, Camellia, Gardenia
Food or Azalea Evergreen Food containing Systemic Insect Control. The systemic in-
secticide cannot be washed off and will control sucking insects such as aphids, thrips and white
flies. Wait until azaleas have finished blooming before fertilizing.
