those with an interest the oppor-
tunity to get a feel for the nature of
the work and gain experience.
According to Janice Ryan, client
services coordinator at the Crisis
Center, volunteers interested in
working on the hotline undergo in-
tense training that includes about
36 hours of instruction (seven
class sessions) and an observa-
tion period in the phone room.
During the training period,
volunteers are instructed in crisis
intervention, listening skills and
effective ways of dealing with
suicidal individuals. At the end of
the training, the. volunteers be-
come certified crisis counselors.
Aside from the hotline, the cen-
ter also sponsors several suicide-
prevention programs, offering
another avenue to experience.

Long-term future bright
“In the short run, prospects for
career success in the field may be
a little shaky, due to the fact that
we may experience some wash-
out and closures because of over-
building,” he said. “However, in -
the long term, I see very good,
very positive things in the field of
adolescent psychiatry. Both the
need and the expertise are cer-
tainly there.”

Lewis said the outlook for the
future of adolescent psychiatric
care, due to the recent overbuild-
ing of psychiatric facilities, is
mixed. Nevertheless, he ultimate-

need” for facilities wishing to build
new wings or units, or even to add
beds.
As a result of programs sup-
ported by the Reagan administra-
tion, this practice was eliminated,
meaning competition could flour-
ish, Lewis said. And it did.
“When we experienced dereg-
ulation, people began to realize
that profit was possible in this in-
dustry, and everybody started
building psychiatric hospitals and
implementing aggressive market-
ing strategies,” he said. “Today it
is estimated that we have 40 per-
cent more hospital beds than we
realistically need, and at least five
times more hospitals than existed
before.... There’s just been an ex-
plosion.”
Aside from private, paid
community schools have trained
more than 18,000 students to help
themselves and their friends avoid
the tragedy of teen-age suicide.
Through Survivors of Suicide sup-
port groups, the center reaches
out to those already traumatized.
The Crisis Center also has de-
veloped crisis intervention teams,
which are called when a student or
teacher dies a violent death.
These teams work with school offi-
cials to support those who are
grieving and to prevent further
problems.
The list of non-profit community
groups who work with the
psychiatric care and support of
adolescents is almost as long as
the list of private institutions in the
Dallas area. These groups pro-
vide a vital service to the commun-
ity while allowing those with an in-
terest in the field and those work-
