before it is planted. Theg procedure
would be to plow it four inchees
deep the first time, six inches
deep the second time over and
eight inches the third round. The
furrow slices should be inverted to
obtain maximum exposure to the
sun. A fourth plowing ten inches
deep would be justified on light
soil that is known to be rather
heavily infested with nematodes.
This repeated plowing will use up
the organic matter in the soil, but
it will also aid in the control of
grass and weed pests. This method
is certainly justified on acreage to
be used for seed bed purposes
where there is insufficient time to
grow a nematode resistant green
manure crop like sweet Sudan
grass.
Most vegetable crops would be
benefitted by the use of nematode
resistant, “grass” crop during the
summer season. The green manure
grass crop should be plowed under
BEFORE seed are formed. Nitro-
genous fertilizer and water should
be applied to land so treated to .
hasten the decay of the woody por-
tions of the green manure crop.

Q—A friend of mine failed to

in connection with his VA compen-
sation claim. Will his compensa-
tion be cut off?
A — Unless he has a good reason
for failing to keep his appoint-
ment, his compensation will be
suspended. When he eventually
reports, retroactive payments may
be made if he presents evidence
clearly establishing that his dis-
ability existed to a compensable
degree during, tre intervening time.
Q — I hold GI insurance and pay
my premiums monthly. Would I
save any money if I started pay-

A — Yes. You would save three

be saving the government money
in reduced bookkeeping costs.

By W. H. FRIEND,
Associate County Agent
As the time for planting fall
vegetables draws near a consider-
ation of the factors that affect
these crops is important. Most
growers of vegeables know what
root knot nematodes do to certain
vegetable crops. The damage
caused by these tiny thread worms
is more noticeable on the sandier
types of soil, and is especially ob-
jectionable on root crops such as
beets, carrots, and potatoes. The
root knot nematode attacks most
of the important vegetable crops
and may greatly reduce yields
when present in large numbers.
They live over from one crop to
another on a wide variety ‘of host
weeds, but not on grasses. Nema-
todes are sensitive to heat and
drouth and that gives us our best
cue for their control. •
Dr. Godfrey, at the A. and M.
College Experiment Station, has
demonstrated that repeated plow-
ing, at successively greater depths,
during hot, dry weather will great-
ly reduce the nematode population
in the plowed area. Dr. Godfrey
has also shown that the yields of
certain vegetable crops on nema-
tode infested soils can be greatly
increased through the proper use
of soil fumigants. Hwever, the
use of soil fumigants is an expen-
sive procedure, and is probably
justified only on intensively farm-
ed areas such as seed beds, nurse-
ries; and tree locations. The plow-
ing and exposure treatment has
been used by 'many Valley farm-
ers and it is not too expensive or
too troublesome to be entirely
practicable.
Land that is to be used for seed
bed planting should certainly be
plowed and replowed several times

Q — I bought a home with a GI
loan. I’m going back into military
service, and I don’t think I’ll be
able to meet my full payments. Is
there anything I can do to reduce
them to fit my income?
A — Discuss your situation with
the holder of your mortgage. If
your total income while* in service
isn’t enough to keep your regular
payments, you may make arrange-
ments with him to pay as much
as you can. ' The amount you are
unable to pay will be postponed

time, you should make arrange-

Q — I expect to complete law

A — No. A bar review course

learned, rather than an advance-

level of knowledge. Under VA’s
post-cut-off date regulations, ad-
ditional training must be a pro-
gression to the next higher level.
