elderly couples who were on the
social security rolls before Sep-
tember 1956.
No combination of social se-
curity benefits payable to a hus-
band and wife will be made
where they are not living to-
gether, or where all or part of
the wife's benefits is based upon
her own record of work under
social security. Any person who
has a special need for a separate
check may, when he gets his no

curity office for his payments
to continue by separate check.
With more than 10 million
men, women and children re-
ceiving monthly social security
benefits, and with the number
increasing each month, the total
cost of issuing checks has be-
come a major concern of the So
cial Security Administration and
of the Treasury Department, It
costs more than 5 cents to pre-
pare and mail each check, in-
cluding postage, check stock, en-

Social Security
Benefits To Be.
In Single Check
Some elderly couples will re-
ceive notice this week that their
social security benefits will be
combined into a single check,
beginning in January, Marion
Harkey, district manager of the
Sherman social security office
announced today.
Other couples who are receiv-
ing separate social security ben
efit checks as husband and wife
will be notified in subsequent
months, Harkey said, usually
at least two months before they
will be paid their first combined
checks.
This new payment procedure
is expected to save the govern
ment about $1 m 111 i o n a year.
Payment of only one check, rep-
resenting the combined monthly
benefit amounts of a retired
worker’and his wife, was start-
ed on a trial basis in September
1956, but was limited mainly to
families in which the wife first
became entitled to benefits in
September 1956 or later. In its
10 months of operation, the new
payment methed has proved un-
successful and productive of

EAST CORINTH, Vt. (P) —
Take a bowl-shaped valley in
the rolling hills of Vermont.
Set a simple, white church in
• it and top the church with a
shining steeple. Nestle a cluster
of houses nearby. Then roll out
a carpet of snow.
Now take this living Christ-
mas card and put it two miles
from a main highway and only I
some 25 miles from the state
capital at Montpelier.
The photographers won,t ne
long in coming. Just ask the 225 1
folks who live in this Vermont
• hamlet.
East Corinth is the "most i
photographed village in New i
England." according to Waller i
Hard Jr., editor of the Vermont '
Life magazine.
Professional'* Favorite
A native is less reserved. Mrs.
Willard Martin, who lives here,
contends no town in the United
States is more popular with
photographers. The great ma ,
Jority of the camera-carrying
visitors are professionals
The reason is East Corinth s :
* picturesque church, homes and
. forested hills. Ask a photogra-
pher to get you a picture of the
"typical New England village"
.and he probably will heed for
" Corinth.
An unknown photographer
catapulted East Corinth to fame
some 20 years ago. Editor Hard
’ says state historians have never
been able to find out who he
was. The photogrepher took a
shot of the village from the hills
nearby late in the 1930s and
sold it to A. Devany. New York
photographic agency.
Photographers started coming
in droves after the first picture
began circulating.
- The Johnny-come-latelies face
a problem that didn’t bother
the early arrivals. It seems folks
in a "typical New England vil.
lage” like to watch television
just like everybody else, so TV’
antennae are springing up on
rooftops and atop the hills.
Cameramen are having mqre
and more difficulty getting a
shot that doesn't include them. .
