QUESTION: How did the, custom of making a Christmas crib originate?
ANSWER. Jesus was born, theEvangeliat -Luketella us, in a humbit stable at Bethlehem be*
cause Hie parents were unable to obtain lodgings at the crowded inn. The stable actually was a
grotto carved out of a hillside. St. Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine and a very devout
woman, converted the original grotto into a chapel and decorated it in marble and gold. Later a
magnificent basilica was built over the grotto. But the custom of erecting replicas of .the Nativity
scene began in the 13th Century when St. Francia of Assist constructed a wooden manger and
grouped about It figures of Joseph, the Mother and Child, the animals and the shepherds. In time,
the practice spread to other countries and was handed down through the ages, until today many
homes, churches, department stores, even public parks and town squares, are adorned with replicas
of ths erib or creche at Chrietmas time.

FOR YOU TO DO: By following the Junior Editors Quiz each day thle week you will be able t
color, cut out and assemble your own Christmas crib. New figures will be added each day until you
have a complete Nativity scene for use under your Christmas tree, in a window or on ths mantis
piece. First we begin with the stable where Christ was born and the manger where He was placed.
Two shepherd boys, each with a lamb, have come to adore Him. Tomorrow more figures will be
added. Be sure to save all the parte in this series so your erlb will be complete for Christmas.
