he still intended to press for the
rest of his stimulus plan, in-
cluding the change in the
standard deduction.
For taxpayers who do not
itemize deductions, the Senate
bill would fix the standard de-
duction at $2,200 for single per-
sons and $3,200 for couples and
heads of household.
It currently ranges from IL-
700 to $2,400 for single persons
and from $2,100 to $2,800 for
married couples. Heads of
household — generally widowed
or divorced women with minor
children — now must use a
single person’s standard deduc-
tion.
The House-passed stimulus
bill would raise the standard
deduction to $2,400 for singles
and $3,000 for couples, keeping
heads of household at the single
person's level.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The
$50 tax rebates are gone from
the Senate’s version of Presi-
dent Carter’s streamlined eco-
nomic stimulus plan, but the bill
still would provide a tax break
for 45 million taxpayers who
take the standard deduction.
The Senate on Tuesday com-
plied with Carter's decision to
scrap the $10 billion tax rebate
plan. It is arguing over his re-
quest to abandon proposed tax
breaks for business worth $3.3
billion over two years.
An effort to knock out the
business tax breaks ran into
strong opposition and was set
for more debate today.
When Carter announced last
Thursday that improved eco-
nomic conditions had led him to
change his mind on the rebates
and business tax breaks, he said

The House bill would result in
a $4.8 billion annual tax cut and
cut taxes an average of $105 for
45.5 million taxpayers.
The Senate bill would reduce
taxes by $5.6 billion annually,
including an average cut of $121
for 47 million taxpayers. But it
also would hike taxes by about
$50 for 1.7 million single per-
sons.
With Carter planning to re-
veal his energy tax plans to
Congress tonight, Senate Re-
publicans argued against any
hasty final action on the stimu-
lus bill.
Carter originally urged giving
businesses the option, through
1980, of taking a 2 per cent boost
in the investment’tax credit,
now at 10 per cent, or an income
tax credit equal to 4 per cent of
the employers' share of Social
Security payroll taxes.
