Floods closed roads in scat-
tered areas of the Midwest to-
day as a series of slow-moving
thunderstorms dumped heavy
amounts of rain.
In the hour and 15-minutes :
just before midnight, Dewitt, :
Neb., received 314 inches.
The storms also reached ;
across Iowa, but the rain was ■
not as heavy.
There were strong thunder-
storms Tuesday night over
western North Dakota, eastern
Montana, central Kansas and
northwestern Oklahoma.
Light thunderstorms dotted
the south and central Rockies :
today. The Texas Panhandle,
northeast Utah, and north-
eastern Wisconsin also had :
rain.
In Austin, Minn., about 90 :
miles south of Minneapolis,
residents began returning to :
their flood-damaged homes
Tuesday as the Red Cedar Riv-
er continued to drop within its |
banks.
Unofficial damage estimates
of Monday’s flood, the second in
10 days, have been put at more
than $50 million
The surging Cedar, which
runs through Austin, forced 200
families to evacuate.
Monday’s flood also damaged
several dozen businesses in
Austin, a city of 27,000. Many
had no flood insurance.
Mild, mostly clear weather
was forecast today across much
of the Northeast and South.
Early morning temperatures
around the nation ranged from
47 in Lewistown, Mont., to 101 in
Blythe, Calif.

ditions from around the nation:
