Smith will be throwing into a Lake View secondary that has
allowed just four completions in 26 attempts.
start at quarterback
Junior Greg Hamilton has been
starting ahead of Mike Miller, but
Miller has come off the bench two
straight games to spark the Bobcat
offense. Against Southeastern, he took
over after a punchless first half, passed
for 143 yards and engineered both
touchdown drives
against strength here tonight when they tangle for the fourth
straight year, and for the second time minus the pressure-
cooker atmosphere of the state playoffs.
Both teams will arrive for the 8 o’clock kick-off in Cen-Tex
Stadium armed with the kind of defenses that can win when the
offense has an off-night.
Lake View, ranked 11th in the state by the Harris Rating
System, has allowed but two touchdowns—both coming in a 15-14
loss to a Kerrville Tivy team that was good enough to rank third
in this week’s Associated Press poll.
Tack on meal-ticket runner Mike Doyle, talented quarterback
Ron Bly and the return of swift wide receiver Dan Ford and its
obvious Gordon Wood’s Lions will have their hands full before
what could be the year’s largest crowd.
Thirteen thousand saw the two teams slug it out in bi-district
at San Angelo in 1976 when a big, physical Lion team scored late
to beat an undefeated Lake View team 14-7.
Another undefeated Lake View team returned that game to
Cen-Tex in 1977, and the state finalist Lions awed a full house by
rolling to a 56-20 victory.
The two teams started a non-district series last year, Brown-
wood winning again, 35-9.
Game 4 looks so close that goal-line stand, a turnover or a field
goal could spell the difference. Both stand 2-1 and both are
coming off shutout victories, Brownwood 29-0 over Round Rock
leads the Bobcats in rushing with a
modest 52.7-yard average Miller, who
iaas completed 13 of 28 passes for 176
yards, has rushed for 48.3 yards a
game Billy Dunk and Gary Peoples
are the top receivers.
Team-wise, the Bobcats rank fourth
in the LSC in offense and second in
defense while HPU is sixth in both
Mayo says the Bobcats are strong
and physical as usual. He calls SWT
defensive guard Elvis Shaw "an All-
American. He will give us trouble."
Cornerback Tracy Smith and defensive
tackle Pete Gibbens had outstanding
games last week.
Other than Smith, HPU's main of-
fensive cog so far has been tailback
David Graham, who ranks third in the
LSC in rushing with an average of 95
yards a game.

Southwest Texas Is M, ranked 13th in
the nation and will arrive for Satur-
day’s Lone Star Conference opener
rated an 18-point favorite over the
Howard Payne Yellow Jackets.
But HPU coach Harold Mayo feels he
has the Bobcats right where he wants
them. “It’s a great opportunity for us.”
he says. ‘We could lead ’em all (LSC)
after Saturday night and have next
week off to get totally well and prepare
for East Texas. What more could you
ask?"
Saturday's 7:30 p.m engagement in
Cen-Tex Stadium is the first LSC game
this season, and the winner will be
leading the league.
Southwest Texas downed NCAA
Division IAA member Southeastern
Louisiana 14-7 last week for its third
straight victory, and if first-year coach

and Lake View 41-0 over Lubbock Dunbar.
A Brownwood defense that has budged for less than 100 yards
in each of its last two starts will be charged with the task of
coping with Doyle, who has already chalked up 443 yards and six
touchdowns. The return of Ford, a wide receiver who can fly,
from a pre-season illness won’t make that job any easier.
Also under the gun is an inexperienced offensive line that will
go nose-to-nose with a 218-pound Lake View front four wired to
tackles Randy Marsh (6-3, 255) and Scott Marecek (6-2, 229).
With Lion center Bo Shero (6-1,208) expected to see little if any
action while nursing a knee injury, Brownwood's guards and
center average just 180 and both tackles go 185
“It wil be a challenge," says Gordon Wood, who will be in
search of his 346th career voctory and his 198th at Brownwood.
"Lake View is awfully strong, and it will take our very best to
win.”
Other than Shero’s knee, the Lions are in good shape
physically.
While the Brownwood defensive has come on strong since a
season-opening loss to Abilene Cooper, the offense has
struggled. “We’re improving offensively, but we’re still not get-
ting the blocking or execution we need,” says Wood, who also
noted ill yards in penalties at Round Rock.
Brownwood has moved best in the air, where Kevin Smith has
completed 23 of 48 passes for 423 yards. Billy Sawyer has been
his favorite target, while tailback Lupe Barrera and fullbacks

and touchdowns and calling what Mayo
described as almost a perfect game.
The victory was Mayo’s first in three
starts as HPU coach and it snapped a
nine-game Jacket losing streak which
started a year ago when Southwest
Texas routed the Paynemen 55-0 in San
Marcos.
SWT has downed Southeastern
Louisiana 14-7 and Prairie View 38-13,
and downs a 19-5 victory over a Texas
Lutheran team that defeated HPU 19-5.
“But we're not going into this thing
with the idea of losing,” Mayo said.
“We’re going in to win, and we can if we
play up to our potential. The keys for us
are good pass protection and no tur-
novers on offense Defensively, we
can't afford to give up an cheap touch-
downs.”
