In a proposed complaint, the
FTC said Procter & Gamble
O. Colgate-Palmolive Co and
Lever Brothers Co. Inc were
engaged in false advertising
Procter & Gamble denied the
accusation though the other
companies had no immediate

The three were given a
chance to settle the complaint
through a consent decree if
, their future ads listed types of
stains not removable by enzyme
detergents Boxes would also
have to carry such lists. the
FTC said

Procter & Gamble’s advertis-
ing for Gain was termed by the
FTC as typical of the allegedly
false claims:
"Stains are locked into fabric
fibers But Gain's enzymes act
like little keys to unlock stains."
The company said it would
contest the complaint In a
statement, it said, its enzyme
products "remove a variety of
common stains that heretofore
were impossible to remove in
the home laundry W* do tell
American consumers about this
capability in our televiion ad-
vertising."
The commission said claims
by Lever Brothers and Coigate-
Palmolive were similar to those
by Procter & Gamble The FTC
said all stains are not taken out
by enzymes and some stains re-
moved in home laundries are
taken out by other than enzyme
ingredients
The safety aspect of enzymes
was not dealt with by the com-
mission. which said investiga-
tions continue into the safety of
enzymes in laundry products.
Consumer advocate Ralph Nad-
i er is among those who have
complained the enzyme prod-
ucts can lead to skin and lung
diseases.

' AMARILLO, Tex. (AP( -
i Amarillo police are looking for
a tardy bandit who telephoned
ahead to tell a service station
attendant he was going to be
robbed
The attendant, Joe Mauk,
laughed at the unidentified call-
I er. who said the station would
be robbed at 2 a.m. Wednesday
At 3 am., a mustacheoed man
entered the station and apol-
ogized for being an hour late.
"This is a stickup." he said
After a five-minute conversa-
tion. Mauk convinced the in-
truder he could go to jail for
such things. The bandit changed
his mind and left.
