WASHINGTON (AP) — in-
creased federal intervention in
the economy to curb price and
wage excesses was declared
possible Saturday by Chairman
Paul W McCracken of the Pres-
ident's Council of Economic Ad-
visers. 1 -
A variety of techniques may
be used, McCracken said. But
he discounted any likelihood
that President Nixon will set up
a “wage-price review board” as
urged by Arthur F. Burns,
chairman of the Federal Re-
serve Board.
McCracken hinted also that
actions short of a freeze of con-
struction prices and wages may
be adopted to deal with what he
called the almost pathological
inflation problem in that indus-
try.
In a question-and-answer ses-
sion with The Associated Press,
McCracken noted a general
trend toward more overt ac-
tion" by the administration in
the past year, including the par-
tial rollback of steel price in-
creases. He added “I would not
rule out the possibility that this
might continue."
The interview:
Q Mr Chairman, in view of
the repeated rejection of wage
and price controls by the Coun-
cil of Economic Advisers, how
does the administration now
justify its threat of a wage-price
freeze in the construction indus-
try’
A. The critical issue here is
not wage-price controls in the
construction industry It's a
broader question of the basic
problem in the coastruction in-
dustry. I think anyone would
agree that the cost problem and
price problem in that industry
have reached almost pathologi-
cal proportions. The Council
and the President have said
repeatedly, we do not favor
wage and price controls We

TAKING OFF—If you can 't beat 'em, join ’em seems
to be the motto of the Osmonas /formerly known as.
the Osmond Brothers) who have one of the hottest
singles in the country in “One Bad Apple.” The record
is No. 1 on a.lot of stations and those who have seen
the Osmonds on TV (Andy WHliams had them on all
the time, before he got so chummy with the Cookie
Bear i are wondering how come they sound so much
like the Jackson Five all of a sudden it could be
because the Five were named group of the year by
Rolling Stone and Billboard and just about everybody
else and sold more than four million records last year,
or maybe the Osmonds just found some soul all of a
sudden. Either way, its' a good record.
BAD BREAKS—Youth Beat is more than saddened to
learn that Tom Fogerty, John’s brother, is leaving the
Creedence Clearwater Revival, although nobody can
knock him for wanting to spend more time with his
wife and four kids. But Tom had an awful lot to do
with everything that made Creedence the top LP-selling
group of 1970 (he was the leader of Tom and the Blue
Velvets, which eventually turned out to be Creedence)
and things aren't going to be the same without him
COAST CLATTER—in case you groove on gossip
and all that, our Los Angeles spies tell us that when
Dave Mason and Cass Elliott did their musical thing
on the Coast recently. Barbra Streisand showed up
escorted by Ryan O’Neil Can it be much longer before
Elliott Gould runs off with Ali MacGraw?
IN THE: COUNTRY—Who says country music is only
for the sticks? Country star Bill Anderson (who hit the
charts hard with "Where Have All Our Heroes Gone?"
and has a new LP out bearing the same title) has one
of the best track records in show business, having packed
houses in Boston. Newark. Philadelphia. Toronto and
(trust us on this one) London, where be played the Pal-
ladium. Cash Box magazine recently called Bill "the
spokesman of the silent majority."-which may or may
not be true, but Youth Beat found him to be the kind of
guy who likes to hear other people's viewpoints and
doesn't try to shove his down anybody's throat.
COLLEGE SCENE—The trend in colleges may well
be starting in Unity, Maine, where Lawrence Reichel, a
former New York business executive, now heads Unity
College The school places greater weight on leader
ship qualities than on grades and uses management
procedures straight off Wall Street Reichel says he
finds there is little connection between a student’s
grades and his achievement in later life, so he’d rather
have students with average marks who have shown
their leadership qualities in athletics, debating, the
drama club or the school paper than the kid who kept
his nose in the book and never learned that much
about what was going on around him.______________
