Progressive and Socialist
Party candidates in New Mexi-
co were strong enough to keep
the Democrats from getting a
majority in 1912. but Wilson did
poll a plurality in the state
In each of the 14 presidential
elections since 1912 New Mexico
has gone with the winner It is
the only state in the nation to do
so
No counties in New Mexico
have voted for the winner every
time, but several have come
_ very close.
Colfax County, for instance,
voted for the winner in 14
straight presidential races. Its
record of perfection was broken
in 1968 when Cotfax County vot-
ers gave a slight plurality to
democrat Hubert H. Humphrey
over Richard Nixon. George
Wallace and two other minor
party candidates received
enough votes to prevent a ma-

April 1 Faster Firm Pageant.
Fredericksburg. Held at the
Gillespie County fair grounds,
each Easter Eve, this event is
perhaps the nation’s most un-
usual Easter celebration. Ac-
cording to legend settlers’
children were frightened by
Indian fires on the hills at
night. To calm the chil-
dren, a pioneer mother told a
charming story of the Easter
Bunny making the fires for
Easter-egg dye pots. For well
over 100 years the Easter
Fires celebration has been
passed from generation to
generation in this German
community. Fires are lighted
in the hills, and that Easter
Event is reenacted.
