heavy guns would have permit-
ted them to equip the fortress
properly.
There was, therefore, no pos-
sibility—particularly in view of
the history in this campaign of
the fate of fortfications against
siege guns of Przemysl serious-
ly defending itself. There was,
’however, the possibility that the
Russian offensive northwards
across the San might develop
quickly enough to turn the left
flank of the investing armies and
so relieve the fortress. This,
however, it failed to do, the Ger-
man resistance being extremely
obstinate and their superiority
in the artillery arm being un-
questionable.
Przemysl, therefore, fell, but
not, as seemed probable at one
time, by investment and gradual
reduction. The allied armies at-
tacking it failed in their deter-
mined effort to complete the en-
circlement of the fortress from
the northeast and southeast.
A most pronounced salient was
formed in the Russian line by
the fortress, and for a consider-
able distance eastwards the Rus-
sians held no more than six miles
of territor on either side of the
’railway line from Przemysl to
Lwow. From the north and from
the south, particularly at Hussa-
kow, the Austro-German armies
made the most desperate efforts
to break through, and had they
’succeeded they would not only
have invested Przemysl on the
■ east, but might have broken the
Russian line and separated the
army facing westwards across
the San from their comrades in
। the southeast. Failing in the ef-
fort to get astride the railway to
the east, the direct reduction of
the fortification west and north
was undertaken and was quickly
successful.
Develope that power which stands al-
ways ready at your elbow, Mr. Business
Man. You can make every dollar so spent “prove in” on your
balance sheet as well or better than any you invest.
