tery itself loses some of its 3
power when the temperature is
lowered and fails to deliver as
much current, even when fully
charged, as it will during warm-
er weather. In addition to this,
it is more difficult for the self-
starter to turn the engine over
when the latter is cold and an
extra strain is therefore placed
on the battery. Finally, cold
weather presupposes shorter
days and a greater use of light,
another factor which must be
taken into consideration.
It is therefore well to pay par-
ticular attention to the “heart”
of the car during the winter and
particularly in the early spring
when its vitality is apt to be
quite low. Distilled water should,
of course, be added at regular
intervals—weekly inspections of

Washington.—The state department
was officially advised in a message
from Charge Summerlin at Mexico
City Thursday of the release of Bruce
Bielaski. Mr. Summerlin said he had
received a telegram from Puenta Ixtia,
Beer where Bielaski was captured by
bandits, stating that he was there
"safe and well.”
Advices Friday to the state depart-
ment from Tampico served to change
materiaily the situation in the Mexi-
can oil region resulting from the hold-
ing for ransom, by a rebel band, of
68 American employes at the Aguaba
camp of the Cortez Oil Company,
an American-owned concern. Consul
Shaw reported that the rebel chief,
Gorozave, and his men left the camp
Monday morning after a 24-hour stay.
The message, dated Wednesday, seem-
ed to have cleared the air, but on its
heels came another dispatch, filed by
the consul, saying that the rebels bad
selzed the Pecera camp of the British
owned La Corona company, and that
about half a dozen Americans were
among the 85 men held there.
In demanding 9000 pesos for the sur-
render of the Pecera property and the
employes, the rebels fixed July 2 as
the date by which payment must , be
made. Whether the 15,000 pesos de-
■ended at the camp was paid, was not
stated in any of the messages receiv-
ed.
The state department promptly in-
structed Charge Summerlin at Mex-
ico City to make representations in re-
gard to adequate protection for any
American held In connection with the
Bow raid on the British-owned com-
pany. Mr. Summerlin also was direct-
ed to press Mexican federal authorities
to capture and punish bandits who cap-
tured A. Bruce Bielaski.
Beyond these new representations to
the Obregon government, there was no
indication the state department intend-
ed to move at present. It was pointed
out that the department was not in
poesesslon of any information tending
to show that the raids in the oil region
were more than they appeared to be
on the face of Consul Shaw's reports,
the operations of bandits levying or
seeking to levy tribute on the oil com-
paniee. If President Obregon or his
officials have any data tending to show
that his political enemies are respon-
Bible for the outbreak in the Tampico
region they have not seen fit to com-
municate that information to Wash-
ington as yet.
In any case, both official and unof-
ficial advices showed that the Obre-
gon government was moving additional
troops into the Tampico district for
the evident purpose of suppressing
rebel or bandit activities. It is gen-
erally assumed in Washington that erf-
ficient troops will be distributed about
the district to prevent such raids as
those of Gorozave as quickly as pos-
sible.
It was evident also from the reports,
official or otherwise, reaching Wash-
ington from the oil region during the
week, that communication with the
outlying camps is slow, at best, and
that detailed accounts of what took
place at the Aguada property have
been unavailable as yet to Consul
Shaw. He did report, however, tLat

camp Monday, threatened to return

plays a vital part in insuring smooth,

nance of power output at Its maxi-

Repairs due to Incorrect lubrication
are frequent and costly. Also, the use
of the wrong oil or the improper use
of the correct oil tends to increase
fuel consumption, the number of
forced stops and the rate of depreci-
ation.
Few Simple Precautions.
With bo much dependent on the cor-
rect lubrication of your engine, it
would be unwise to neglect the few
simple precautions necessary to in-
sure the very best of results.
The choice of the correct oil for
any particular engine is a matter for
a competent engineer. It involves the
following four basic lubricating fac-
tors affected by engine design:
First—Engine operating tempera-
ture depends primarily on the service
or “loading” of the engine. The steady,
uninterrupted, almost full-load work
of the tractor engine determines high
temperatures as contrasted with the
intermittent, variable-load work en
countered by the truck or passenger
car engine. The engine size, the
capacity of the cooling system and the
fuel used are some of the other fea
tures of design which have a bear-
ing on operating temperatures. As
all oil tends to lose body or thin out
under heat we are naturally Influ-
enced toward the use of heavier-
bodied oils where operating tempera
tures are high.
Distribution of OH.
Second—OU distribution. The ability
of the lubricating system to distribute
the oil to all friction surfaces wifere
the lubricant is chilled and thickened
determines how fluid the correct oil
must be. In other words this feature
of engine design is the limiting factor
with respect to oil body.
Some lubricating systems are
adapted for perfect circulation of all
oils from the heaviest-bodied to the
lightest; others function best on oils
of light or medium body.
The correct oil is of such body as
tq perfectly distribute through the
system of lubrication provided at all
atmospheric temperatures likely to be
encountered in service.
Not All Burn Equally Well.
Third—Carbon formation. Not all
oils are equally clean-burning, nor are
all engines equally “sensitive” to the
baneful effects of carbon formation.
The correct oil will be of such char-
acter as to minimize carbon formation
and the troubled which result from

unin all business has been completed,
acres OTleers for the ensuing year will be

late the produce of this year to the best
such deposit.
- i Fourth-Seal for piston rings. The
correct oil will be of ample body and
correct character to seal the piston
rings against passage of the highly
compressed gases on the compression
and power strokes. Such sealing is
essential to conserve power, increase
fuel economy and forestall excessive
dilution of the oil supply with fuel
and contamination by water and other
foreign substances. Plainly, the sub
ject is an intricate one, the subject
with which the average operator is at
