Surprise Birthday Dinner Honors
Mr. John Browning’s 72nd
Birthday, August 30
The children and grandchildren
and other relatives and a group of
Mr. and Mrs. John Friday and
little daughter, Janet, of Galveston,
visited in the Edgar Owen home
Sunday.
Mr. Charlie Hoffman and family,
of Bastrop, visited Mr. Jake Hoff-
man Sunday afternoon.
Miss Oneita Coulson, of Austin,
has been visiting in the Albert Cot-
tle home the past two weeks.
Miss Faye Owen spent the week-
end at Lytton Springs with Misses
Eula Mae Smith and Bobbie Mor-
gan. Olan Smith, Bud Roberts and
Miss Luella Pearson accompanied
her home Sunday afternoon.
Mr. G. W. Dunkin and his son,
Dee and daughter, Ellen, have mov-
ed to Ballinger, Texas. His grand-
sons, Leon and Clyde Duncan and
Curtis Fleming accompanied them
out there, but have returned.
Mrs. Hattie Clopton of McDade,
was a guest of Mrs. Edgar Owen
Monday for the noon hour.
Mrs. Carroll has been employed as
teacher for our Mexican school. She
contemplates living in the teacher-
age here and her little daughter will
attend the Oak Hill school. •

The W. M. S. held its annual mis-
sion Festival Friday evening and was
very successful. Rev. Knaak of
Pflugerville was guest speaker. Re-
freshments were served in the hall
and income for the evening amount-
ed to $12.00.
The Rev. Fred Olson and family
have returned home from a few days
of vacation.
OAK HILL, August 31.—Rain
Friday and also Sunday afternoon,
putting a fine season in the ground,
and will benefit pastures greatly.
Some few sweet potatoes were
marketed the past week.
We will be quite busy the next
few days planting garden. Carrots,
beets, beans, turnips, lettuce, mus-
tard and tender green will be among
the varieties planted.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Scarborough
and daughter, Miss Margie, spent
the week-end in Houston, with Mr.
and Mrs. Wallace Scarborough. Mrs.
Scarborough remained for a -week’s
visit.

Mr. and Mrs. Arvin Browning and
children of Beaumont returned home
after a visit with friends. While
they were here they spent Tuesday
and Wednesday night with Mr. and
Mrs. Ollie Browning, at Austin, and
spent Thursday in San Antonio.
Miss Mildred Burk of the Knobbs
spent Saturday night with Miss
Louise Wilson, going to Beaumont
Sunday for a visit with relatives.
Mr. Ewing Cartwright is able to
be up after several days illness.
Mrs. Sam Walker is reported as
improving.
Everyone brought a well-filled bas-
ket which was spread on the tables
under the shade trees in front of
his home. To make this_bountiful
dinner complete the children fur-
nished barbecued mutton which was
barbecued by Mr. W. E. Lawhon and
Mr. Josh Browning, Mr. Lawhon
making the sauce which made the
meat very delicious. Those present
for this occasion were: Mr. and Mrs.
Ollie Browning, Mr. and Mrs. Ross
Otts and family, Mr. and Mrs. K.
L. Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Clark Con-
dra and children, Mr. John Lawhon,
Mr. J. M. Minter, all of Austin; Mr.
Terrel Fleming, of Waco; Miss Mil-
dred Browning and Mrs. (Pearson,
of Round Rock; Mr. and Mrs. Louis
Wilson, of Elgin; Mr. and Mrs. Ar-
vin Browning and children, of Beau-
mont; Mr. Billie Jinnings, of Ber-
tram; Mr. Leroy Creel, of Bastrop;
Mr. Wayland Burk, of Prewitt; Mr.
Virgel Taylor, of McDade; Mr. and
Mrs. Elvie Carnell and son and Mr.
and Mrs. Alfred Browning and fam-

Turner Wilson Thursday.

been visiting with friends and re-
latives in this community, returned
to her home in Beaumont Wednes-

Mrs. Allie Horton and children, of
Houston, who have been visiting in
McDade returned home with them.
