A Summer Boarding. House.
There is a summer boarding-house in
Phlsdelphia which is usually well
filled'with guests during the season.
Thee guests are the pet eats of people
who go away to enjoy themselves and
are willing to pay their board during
the summer. The hotel is a three-
story brick house of eightrooms, where
everything has been arranged for the
accommodation and comfort of the
boarders; there are shelves covered
with mats and rugs on which they may
repose; they have the liberty of the
whole house, but are not allowed be-
yond the back fence. The proptietor
sets a good table, and appears to have
the welfare of his guests at heart. The
terms are five dollars for two months,
which is generally the length of the
season, and the hotel accommodates
100 cats. This seems to be more profit-
able than a boarding-house for human
animals, and therefore strange that
such hotels are not more numerous.
could have been saved hai l used this remedy, and
I have always felt responsible for its death. None
of my children have since been sick during the sum:
mer, which is due to my care and lhe free use of
Pain Killer.”
There are thousandsof parents following the same
course, and the constant hen I th of their children is
their reward. No parent can amord to risk the life
of a child when so sure and simple a means of sale-
ry can be secured.

A Story of Washington.
Some time ago a party of gentlemen
at Woodland were discussing the char-
acteristics of George Washington, the
l ather of His Country, when Sam. Ru-
land, the gorgeousness of whose imag-
ination has made him well known
throughout the state, broke in upon
the conversation. “You are right, gen-
tlemen,” said he, “Washington was a
cold, austere man. He was as haughty
as could be, and a stickler for formali-
ties. There was never but one occa-
sion, so far as I have heard, when he
threw aside the usual frigidity of his
demeanor. That instance was narrated
to me years ago by my grandfather,
who served under Washington in the
war of the revolution. It was the next
day after a battle in which the British
troops had been routed. The colonial
troops were drawn up in ranks, and
Washington rode down the line, mount-
ed upon the white charger of which
you have all heard. When he came up
to where my grandfather was standing
the latter called out:
“’Why, how do you do, general?"
“Gen. Washington reined up his
charger, dismounted, threw his arms
around my grandfather’s neck and ex-
claimed:
“ 'Ruland, do not call me general -
call me George!’ ”

The standard yield and weight of
eggs for the different varieties of do-
mestic fowl are about as follows:
Light Brahmas and partridge Cochins,
eggs seven to the pound; they lay, ac-
cording to treatment and keeping,
from eighty to 100 per annum, often-
times more if kept well. Dark Brah-
mas eight to the pound, and about
seventy per annum. Black, white
and buff Cochins, eight to the pound;
100 is a large yield per annum.
Plymouth Kocks, eight to the pound,
lay 100 per annum. Houdans, eight
to the pound, lay 150 per annum;
non-sitters. La Fleche, seven to the
pound, lay 130 per annum; non-sitters.
Black Spanish, to the pound, lay 150
per annum. Dominiques, nine to the
pound, lay 130 per annum. Game
fowls, nine to the pound, lay’ 130 per
annum. Crevecurs, seven to the
pound, lay 150 per annum. Leghorns,
nine to the pound, lay 150 to 200 per an-
unm. Hamburgs, nine to the pound, lay
170 perannum.Polish.nineto the pound,
lay 150 per annum. Bantams, six-
teen to the pound, lay sixty perannum.
Turkeys’ eggs, five to the pound, lay
from thirty to sixty per annum. Ducks'
eggs vary greatly with different
species, but from live to six to the
pound, and from fourteen to twenty-
eight per annum, according to age and
keeping. Geese, four to the pound,
lay twenty per annum. Guinea fowls,
eleven to the pound, lay sixty per an-
num. Large eggs have generally a
thicker shell than small ones. By
comparison with eggs in former times,
those of improved breeds of fowls of
the4eresent day’ have gained one-third
in weight. There are soft eggs laid
entirely without shells, or with only
the albuminous inner membrane. This
occurs chiefly in hens that are too fat;
and this failing cin be remedied by
supplying calcareous substances with
their food.—Science Monthly.
