Patriot Band earns UIL
a awards in its second yearBy Jayson Lindley
In the back corner of GCM, out of the way
rn pretty much every other class a student
'uld elect to take, is the band hall, a room
at many Patriots call home, location
;twithstanding.
To enter the band hall is to step into a world
of key signatures, marching formations, brass,
woodwinds, reeds and spit valves, and to love
every second of it. Here, a band nerd is
anything but an insult, and taking pride in the
Organization, says Director Mr. Richard Lewis, is
essential to being a part of it.
"The band is a community" he said. "Since
ust year, I think that idea has really grown for
thesee guys. We've become so much tighter as
a group, become better friends and
coworkers. I personally think it shows in how we
sound and how we look as a group."
Stellar performances were to be had
>ughout the year- the band's UIL
petitions. including their marching in thereckoned with despite a young program. A
number of students also made great showings
at solo and ensemble competition. But the
biggest accomplishment this year has been, as
Lewis will tell you over and over, not a score,
but an attitude.
Mr. Lewis gives accolades to all the
students who worked hard in band this year,
including his three "fantastic drum majors"
Ashley Almanza, Ashley Miller, and Danielle
Sanders.
The noise as one passes the band hall is
peaceful to the ears- in the band's sound and
presence, particularly on the football field, the
hard work becomes apparent. For the Patriot
band, there is nothing more exciting then to
hear their efforts become a wall of sound for
the entire school to hear, whether it be a
formal concert, or the famous impromptu
drumming as the band exits pep rallies.
Whatever, and wherever the sound comes
out. each player will tell you the same- it's93
