ington failed on a field goal (the
ball hit the upright) on Dec. 17
and let Cincinnati win in the over-
time, it took a lot of incentive
away from Houston. The Bengal
victory won the Central Division
title for Cincy and when Denver
beat New England, the Oilers
were assured of a play-off spot.
Houston should have wanted a
victory badly just to assure the
not permitting its chief, Yassir
Arafat, to address the UN in New
York because he is the responsi-
ble head of the organization that
engages in terrorism.
Informally, however, at the re-
ception at the UN for him, Gor-
bachev had words of friendship
for Israel and the Jewish people
in speaking with Israeli officials
assigned to the UN. In addition,
Jewish cosmetics queen Estee
Lauder scored a coup by welcom-
ing Mrs. Raisa Gorbachev at her
resplendent Manhattan quarters.
Lauder sprayed Rosa with per-
fume in a 37th floor salon above
Fifth Avenue and gave her among
other things, a Snoopy doll and
two "I Love New York" T-shirts.
Asked how she scored the coup,
Lauder replied, "I don't tell se-
crets; do you?"
Regarding Jewish emigration,
Gorbachev reversed himself from
his remarks in London shortly af-
ter he became the Soviet Union's
chief authority. At that time, he
said that was an internal matter
and brusquely set aside the issue.
But in New York, he said strict
time limitations would be ob-
served on the secrecy provision
which had been applied indis-
criminately to Jewish applicants
for emigration papers because

REEL TWO - OILERS MUST HIT
HARDER OFFENSIVELY
No doubt it was the defense
that let down on Sunday, Dec. 18,
as it did against Seattle and Pitts-
burgh, yet I feel to win on Satur-
day, Dec. 24, the Oilers must
come up with a hitting attack that

ANNOUNCERS
Just like you, I am very disap-
pointed that the Houston Oilers
blew a 16 point lead and lost to
Cleveland, 28 to 23, and I am wor-
ried that they must now return to
the "House of Ice" on Saturday,
Dec. 24, in a wild-card game.
As sad as I was on the inability
of Houston to hold old-timer Don
Strock in check the second half, I
figure the Browns made some key
adjustments coming into the last
half and Houston didn't change
its tactics.
Yet, I think I was more frus-
trated and disappointed the way
TV announcers Bob Trumpy and
Don Criqui handled the game
than I was in Houston's loss. They
were hometowners and kept
praising the Browns, even after
Houston jumped to a big lead.
Not once did they crede Houston
and their enthusiasm for Cleve-
land showed throughout.
I know you have hometown an-
nouncers. Take the KODA duo of
Jerry Trupiano and former quar-
terback Don Trull. They play it for
the Oilers and no wonder... it is
the Oilers who pay the bill.
Channel 11 sports announcer
and former Oiler quarterback
Gifford Neilson blasted Ladd
Herzog and the Oilers and he
was fired.
I cannot see why announcers
have to be biased for one team,
especially when they are doing a
telecast for the entire nation.

police lines and sat along First
Avenue. That thoroughfare was
' closed for traffic and hundreds of
police patrolled it.
As the first candle of a huge
Chanukah menorah was lighted,
protesters chanted, "Let our peo-
ple go" and "1, 2, 3, 4 open up
the door". They were led by Rab-
bi Abraham Weiss, who carried a
large Torah. Weiss and Zeesy
Schnur, the coalition's executive
director, said Gorbachev was
making insufficient progress in
emigration of Soviet Jews. About
15,000 have been allowed to leave
this year, a large increase over
other Gorbachev years in power
but less than a third of the record
high of 51,329 in 1979. Schnur
said, "We know of 100,000 who
have requested applications to
begin the (emigration) process."
An estimated 300,000 more are
said to have documentation to
obtain visas. A contrast with the
Jewish demonstration in New
York was that just a year earlier,
some 250,000 marched in Wash-
ington in protest against Gorba-
chev's policy.
Arabs cheered Gorbachev's for-
mal UN remarks. He described
the U.S. bar of Arafat as a "seri-
ous incident" that affected the
"work" of the General Assembly.
"What is more," he said, "this
happened at a time when the
PLO has made a constructive step
which facilitates the search for a
solution to the Middle East prob-
lem with the involvement of the
UN Security Council". He said,
"We voice deep regret over the
incident and our solidarity with
the PLO.
Zehdi Terzi, the PLO's repre-
sentative at the UN, said he "very
much appreciated" that Gorba-
chev had "singled out" the PLO
in his speech. The Soviet Union
has consistently supported the
PLO and derided Israel for al-
most two decades. The Kremlin
fostered the "Zionism-racism"
resolution and. in November, de-
spite his statements about peace
and justice, the Soviet Union vot-
ed to suspend Israel's credentials
in the UN. The Kremlin also is re-
garded as the originator of the
international conference concept
to settle the Arab-Israeli conflict.
In another aspect, it was seen as
seeking to improve its own rela-
tions with the U.S. by pressuring
the PLO to modify its position to
obtain a dialogue with Washing-
ton.
