I arrived at my hotel about five
minutes after 6 p.m. Oleg and a
friend arrived within a few min-
utes and the three of us took a
tide. I met a Russian lew, Oleg street with their youthful throng.

Synagogue while the rough, tu-
multuous crowd was pushing for ,
access to a ceremony whose
words they would not under-
stand. The building's heat, the un-
opened windows and the crowd
itself soon acted as deterrents.
Oleg found three friends who
squeezed through the crowd to

After we left the Synagogue,
our group of five returned to
Oleg's family apartment to talk
about Israel. His mother joined us
to ask questions about Israel and
the United States. Everyone in the ’
group had friends who had left

I parted at midnight, I felt some
members of our informal group

gogue for Simchat Torah before,
but the young tendto stay outside
the Synagogue in the street.
The Russian Jews come to the
Synagogue out of a thirst for their
past. Without song and prayer
knowledge, the service is some-
what depressing. An American
cantor, Jacob Mendelson, had
been invited to sing at the Syna-
gogue that night. Cantor Mendel-
son, was the first Western cantor
invited to the USSR since 1917.
The cantor's style and innovations
from the pulpit brought a real de-
gree of spirit (Ru-ach) to the old-
er aged crowd. After a dozen To-
rahs had been paraded around
the Synagogue, the antor was
absolutely overwhelmed by sev-
eral hundred congregants asking
him to sign a Jewish New Year
post card a woman was selling for
half a buck each. By 8:30 p.m.,
the lights of the Synagogue
flashed and the older congre-
gants began to tell us all to leave
the Synagogue.
Jewish songs were being sung
on the street and Jewish dancing
was being led by very vocal Amer-
ican youths in the street. Police
were dearly visible, but just
watched the crowd of several
thousand. An announcement was
made via a bullhorn that Hebrew
classes would be formed in Janu-
ary. I asked the group I was with
about the Hebrew classes and it
was received with skepticism.
"How many students and how
many spies!" was the reply.
By 10 p.m., the Russian police,
using their own bullhorns, began’
to tell the Jews to leave. "Atten-
membered’’. First, he said, as
Secretary of State George Shultz
"emphasized", the U.S. remains
"unflinching" in its commitment
to the security and survival of Is-
rael. Second, "it is not the Amer-
icans whom the PLO must con-
vince that they seek peace; rather
it is the Israelis". Third, "it is now
time for other Arab states, espe-
cially Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria
and Iraq, to end their state of war
against Israel and lend public sup-
port to the peace process."
Fourth, the U.S. does not and
should not recognize Arafat's
declaration of an independent
Palestinian state. Such a state
- should it ever come into exist-
ence - must be at the end of the
negotiating process and not a ■
precondition to negotiations. Fur-
thermore, a two-state solution is
not the way to peace when pre-
vious PLO statements and docu-
ments have indicated that this is
merely the first step toward the
"liberation of Palestine" which
means the destruction of Israel.
This strategy, enunciated even
after Algiers by one of Arafat's
top deputies, must be repudiated
publicly and unambiguously. Fifth,
if the PLO is serious about re-
nouncing terrorism, it should dis-
band "Force 17", Arafat's elite
terrorist unit; repudiate the pro-
vision of the PLO which calls for
Israel's destruction; halt all infil-
tration attempts into Israel and
move to end the violence in the
