Siegi Izakson recalls Mike Wallace's report that
all is well with the Jewish Community in Syria
This is in answer to Joyce Berkman's letter in the lewish Herald-
Voice of Nov. 8,1990, regarding Mike Wallace spreading anti-Semitic
lies and being Jewish. Do you remember when Mike Wallace went to
Syria and reported that all is well with the Jewish Community there?
When confronted with journalistic "inaccuracy" (lies), he went again
to Syria, and his report was the same. Do you believe that a commu-
nity of Jews which is restricted to travel and must live in a ghetto -and
individuals being arrested on false charges - is a WELL community?
Yes, we have many "Jewish" anti-Semites in journalism, e.g., Flora
Lewis, Thomas Friedman, etc.
And, as for not making WAVES!!! Please, not again ... had the
lewish community made WAVESH! from 1933-1945, perhaps the
tragedy of the Holocaust would not be as enormous as it was - SIX
Frieda Tiras responds to media treatment
of the assassination of Rabbi Meir Kahane
Editor's note: Some portions of this letter have been omitted.
This letter is in response (to the current media treatment of the
assassination of Rabbi Meir Kahane, concerning quoted statements
such as that there will be no "crocodile tears" shed over his death).
... Perhaps if there had been more Meir Kahanes during that period
in time (the Hitler era], there would be no Holocaust memorials to-
day. Many years ago, my husband, myself and my children had the
honor and pleasure of spending an evening with Rabbi Kahane when
he was in Houston. Although I found many of his ideas quite radical,
the man himself was a very soft-spoken talented human being who
charmed us with guitar-playing, singing and many wonderful stories.
We were living in Kansas City for several years during the 1970s and
at that time had the pleasure of spending an entire weekend with him
and several dose friends. True, he was a radical with extremely radical
ideas; he did not endearhimself to many people because of his fanat-
icism; but it is also true that he was a man who believed so intensely
in his Judaism and in the survival of Israel that, right or wrong, he felt
that his way was the only way. There are many people who will shrug
and say he was asking for it, but these same people will still feel the )
outrage of one of their fellow Jews being assassinated. We Jews must
tand together before the world and regardless of personal feelings
by many persons both here and in Israel, he will be mourned
Sharon Jaffee says her offer to contribute
items to help Soviet emigres was rejected
A community that has shouted "Operation Exodus" for nearly a year
now has rejected my offer to contribute clothing, linens and other
household goods to the new Soviet migrs. I was recently told by
someone at the Federation that neither the Federation nor the Jewish
Family Service would accept donations other than furniture because
there is no facility for this. I was also told that many people like my-

Let us each employ political power and pressure
before we have no choice, says Karen L. Baker
Meir Kahane was killed not only as an Israeli political figure, as the
Israeli government spokesperson was quoted, but because he was a
lew. U.N. resolution 672 made it clear that no condemnation would
be leveled at those who murderously attack Jews. The United Nations,
spearheaded by the U.S.A., has seen to it that again, it is open season
on Jews. Israel's existence has ensured that all of us in the Diaspora
can hold our heads high as proud Jews. But once the attacks on Jews
in Israel go unchallenged and protested by the vast majority of Dias-
pora Jewry, and unmentioned and uncondemned by world govern-
ments (and ours foremost among them), it will not any longer be safe
to be a Jew in the Diaspora. We are bound, if not by devotion, then by
destiny, to raise our voices in rage to our government, newly elected
public servants and incumbents, from the local level to the Senate and
the President and State: We will not have Israel betrayed, we must
not bow to Arab blackmail, we will not pay the price for the anti-Sad-
dam Hussein Arab-U.S. alliance. We will not watch our Israeli fellows
fall under attack without acting.
Meir Kahane was a divisive figure and I fear that the revulsion he
stirred among many Jews will dissuade them from condemning and
deploring his murder. But he died as a Jew, speaking to a Zionist
gathering. Let us not be silent, lest his message resound louder after
death than in life: the only way to defend ourselves as Jews, he said, is
through armed defense.
Let us each employ political power and pressure before we have no
choice.
