Meetings take place in capitols
throughout the Mideast; the U.S.
Secretary of State emerges from
each meeting, stating firmly that

Without arguing that there is
moral equivalence between Israel
and the regimes of Assad and
Teheran, it is fair to say that the
problem does not rest with those
countries alone, but with Wash-
ington. One cannot blame Assad
or Rafsanjani for taking what
Bush is offering them.
What is inconceivable is that
U.S. policy makers have not
learned the lesson of Mideast
politics since the end of World
War II, that the pursuit of a "bal-
ance of power" in the Mideast is
doomed to failure.
Yet, here they go again, trying
to achieve just such a balance.
Today, in the eloquent style of
our President, it is "Assad, good;
Saddam, bad." It was not that
long ago that that statement was
reversed. The search for a regime
in the region to "balance" the
. power of Israel has led to absurd
formulations, often followed by
poorly-conceived arms sales and
"technical aid". Such absurdities
often cost innocent lives.
record of always repaying its outstanding
debts. So, loan guarantees for Israel can
cost the U.S. - exactly nothing!
If President Bush's current crusade to
the Middle East denies loan guarantee help
to Israel, then Houston Jewry must take
an affirmative step to assure the exodus of
its fellow religionists from any country that
prohibits equality for all its inhabitants.
One affirmative step that can be under-
present Israeli policy on settle-
ments, as well as from those who
wish to see Israel destroyed.

Billy B. Goldberg, one of the speakers
of the evening, has formed the Society of
Homebuilders for Israel. Join with him to
help accommodate the anticipated arrival
of 200,000 new Soviet and Ethiopian im-
migrants by the end of 1991.
And - do not be confused by Israel's
humanitarian needs and the acrimonious
debate over Settlements in Occupied
Lands vs. Loan Guarantees.
All of Jerusalem is a part of Israel. The
annexation of the Golan Heights was nec-
essary to thwart Syrian shelling of peace-
ful Jewish lands. In a free world, Jews cer-
tainly have a right to reside on the west
bank of the Jordan River as well as in coun-
tries of their choice, while Israel and its

most unlikely that Assad will

Youth Symphony regarding change in rehearsal day
Today is Friday, the 13th. Tomorrow is this school year's first re-
hearsal of our fantastic Houston Youth Symphony. their senior or-
chestra's weekly rehearsal day has been changed from Sunday after-
noons to Saturday mornings, 8:30 to 11:15. Readers of my observation
can make the following moves: 1. Write a letter to 5075 Westheimer
#699, Houston, TX 77056 - phone 621-2411, insisting that rehearsals
be returned to Sunday afternoons, beginning Jan. 1,1992. 2. Request
that the board will not meet on Rosh Hashanah as has happened this
week. The board president has written to thank me for bringing this
to his attention. I trust that the move was inadvertent. 3. The name of
the organization is Houston Youth Symphony and Ballet. We haven't
seen much of the excellent Allegro Ballet. I encourage you to write to
the board and insist that the ballet wing be funded and presented ac-
cording to the original plan. The ballet should perform with the. Youth

written and published a book about former Jewish residents Of
the community of Gevelsberg. He is continuing his research and
is trying to locate still other former Jewish residents of that commu-

with one of her sons somewhere in Texas. *
Mr. Kappel has asked me to help him located Mrs. Waldheim.
I would appreciate it very much if you could publish a small article in

Sara P. Simon responds to letters written by
Gerry Stern and Milford, Herbert Wisenberg
Re: letter of Gerry Stem UHV, Sept. 19,1991]
Mr. Stern's letter was most timely for me: I have been trying to
convince my Jewish brethren (98% of the time unsuccessfully) that
we Jews while commemorating the Holocaust should never forget
about the Holocausts of others.
Three million Cambodians were killed during the Pol Pot regime in
the '70s. (I had the opportunity to meet the survivors at a D.P. camp
on the Thai-Cambodian border in 1987); the half million Turks slaugh-
tered by the Turks during the early part of the century; the two hundred
Chinese killed by "smiling" Indonesians in the '70s while their
"peaceful" Balinese cousins, led by Hindu priests, simultaneously
eliminated 20,000 "Communists".
I could continue indefinitely: Argentina in the '70s and early '80s;
Chile in the '70s, '80s and now the '90s ...
But most important is for us not to lose sight of the fact that others
too have suffered their own Holocausts.
Until this happens, Israel must use its own
resources to maintain a survival presence
between it and the disputed Kingdom of
Jordan. On Page Five, read the report that
U.S. Jews are continuing their effort on be-
half of absorption in Israel after President
Bush's threat to veto the legislation now.
And on Page Eight, note that the Gulf War's
General Thomas Kelly finds that the West
Bank is key to Israel's security.

For the record, American loan guaran-

Israel by moneylenders when it seeks

Lest someone in this wide world fails to
remember, favorable consideration of loan
guarantees to the Jewish state in no way
calls for transfer of U.S. Treasury funds to
Israel. However, if the Jewish state failed
to repay such loans under loan guarantee
consideration, then the U.S. would be lia-

Both Wisenbergs who describe Tikkun magazine as a sponsor
of groups "(who) do nothing but undermine the safety and security
of the people of Israel..." might find the contents of that magazine's
last issue to be of interest. Page eleven carries Tikkun's own version
of "Al Chet"("For Our Sins"). Two excerpts:
"For the sins of not recognizing the pain and humanity of the Pal-
estinian people
"And for the sins of not recognizing the humanity and pain of the
Israeli people or for blaming everything on Israel."

So, please, Wisenbergs, look before you stereotype!
I should fike to add that I observed the humanity and pain of the
Israeli people firsthand last April when my husband and I worked for
two weeks as volunteers at an army base near Beer Sheva.

Sara P. Simon
