Fletcher, nsw manager of ths Phil-
Iles, is an optimist.
Fletcher reached the ranks of
stardom as shortstop for the-New
York Giants.
Trained in ths school of John Mc-
Graw. Fletcher thinks victory all
tho time. Defeat has no pines In
his vocabulary.
Placed in charge of a team that
many eritics are unkind enough to
consign to last piece, Fletcher Ie In
no way dinoouraged. He plans to
make a better showing than the
Phillies did last ysar. He feels that
he will bs abls to carry out his
plans.
Regardlesn of where they finish
the Phillles of 1*23 will plsy with
a much better eplrit than did the
team of last year. Fletcher's ag-
urggation will battle all the way.
When defeated they will go down
fiKhtiyu rather than meekly accept-
Ing tne reverse, with the thought
that the playing of the game merely
brought the eeason that much nearer
to the Hose. ,
Theores of Fletcher.
Fletcher never falis to impress
upon hie players that they did not
finish last in 1922. The Phiilies
have held down the tail-end po-
sition for so many years that
Fletcher wants his players to keep
in mind the fact they did not finish
..there Inst year. I
Ths other point that he keeps
driving home is that by finishing
sixth the club will show a eubetan-
tal improvement. In various ways
he tries to show where the ’team I"
stronger tian last year and should
make a better showing.
Sixth place is ike spot Fletcher is
shooting at. There are some who
