FELINE UNHAPPY—King, a star attraction at Palisades Amuse-
ment Park in New Jersey, shows no great joy at his birthday
party, despite Ethel Purtle’s attempt to cheer him up with a meat-
filled cake decorated with hot-dog candles. King, you see, is 10
years old, and catty neighbors have remarked that he looks posi-
tively beastly. If this keeps up, he’ll have to start lion about his
age. All kitten aside, he’s still a great performer. His favorite
trick is riding a motorcycle around a wall.

world of fashion this year, according to House & Garden decorating au-
thorities. They report that cotton fabrics of every description have been
adapted from the fashion field for use in the home. The room shown above
is designed in metallic gingham by Galey & Lord that is also a favorite

initial casting was a crude kettle. TODAY—
huge blast, open hearth, bessemer and electric
furnaces in the U.S. can surpass iron and steel
production of the rest of the world. Hundreds of
patented inventions have poured greater produc-

duced iron in fires built on the windward Side of
banks, or in pits or rock furnaces, using bellows.

Amendment Vote
Is Postponed
Austin—A new date for submis-
sion of 10 or more constitutional
amendments was approved by the
House Tuesday.
It accepted the Nov. 8 date sug-
gested by the Senate. This nulli-
fied the Sept. 24 date previously
fixed by both houses, but Speaker
Manford observed that the time
is still subject to change.
This will allow the legislature
to set one day for voting on all
proposed constitutional amend-
ments—including some which still
await a legislative decision—and
on new State Board of Education
members.
Newspapers which have carried
first notices of constitution amend-
ments election as originally sched-
uled for Sept. 24 will be paid for
the advertising, Secretary of State
Ben Ramsey reported. He said
publication of the Sept. 24 no-
tices will not be halted until a
new date has been finally set.
Ramsey was unable to give an
immediate estimate of what it
would cost the state to run new
notices of the election. He said
his office would honor bills sub-
mitted for first publication that
have run or are now running.

Lake Wales, Fla.—A strange
illness that turns new-born babies
a bluish tinge at times, caused
the death of a fourth infant here
Tuesday.
Miss Bree Kelly, superintendent
of Lake Wales hospital, said doc-
tors believe the attacks were
caused by poisoning from a laun-
dry dye used in marking diapers.
“We’re not sure,” she added,
"we’ve made a research of every-
thing.” Results of an autopsy are
being awaited.
The five infants became ill
June 21 a few hours after the
first batch of diapers marked
with a new dye containing analin
oil was used, Miss Kelly said.
Only last Friday, the Ameri-
can Medical Association Journal
urged special precautions against
poisoning babies with analine
dyes used to mark diapers. The
Journal said 72 cases of poison-
ing from coal tar derivative dyes
had been reported and that five
infants had died.
“Prevention of such accidents
is simple,” the editorial said. "If
the diapers are boiled after they
are stamped, and thoroughly
dried before use, the dye becomes
fixed and absorption does not oc-
cur.”
At the hospital here, a mother
who noticed her baby turning blue
called a nurse’s attention to it.
The strange color soon was found

This was the association’s pre-
view of holiday violence:
Nine hundred persons will be
hurt in traffic accidents during
the week-end from Saturday
through Monday.
Twenty-seven will be killed in
auto accidents.
A dozen will be drowned.
Twenty-five will die as suicides
or murder victims.
Fifteen more will die in plane
crashes, fires and other accidents.
That’s a total of 79 violent deaths.
These predictions were made
by Charles A. Miller, president of
the Texas Safety Association, aft-
er a holiday accident prevention l
conference with officials of the
Texas Department of Public Safe-
ty.
