I, too, have many concerns about
the alcohol use of Llano youth. I am
convinced that we have some of the
finest young people in the world
living here in Llano County. I deal
with them through sports, band and I

main concern for them and their
peers.
It disturbs me that the adults they
admire and respect condone and
encourage their use of alcohol. Our

I am an employee at the Llano
Hospital. For about a year now,
every Thursday morning, Jeannette
from Jeannette’s Bakery has been
bringing boxes of doughnuts for all
the employees at the hospital.
We here at the hospital don’t know
who to thank, so I thought if I wrote
you this letter, I could thank the
generous person. We all enjoy the
doughnuts.
Anonymous person, I thank you
very much.
Take the nation's idiocy over this
year’s Superbowl for instance. We
read that tickets were being scalped
at up to $2,000 each. A 60-second
commercial on the television broad-
cast was going at $1,350,000, and
probably hamburgers in San Diego
were selling for about ten bucks, if
you could find them. All that. It
seems, is kind of going overboard on
football. The Wanderer is just happy
that he didn’t have to try to get a car
out of that madhouse after it was
over.

Recently, I visited your hospital as
a patient due to an accident while
hunting in your area. Having en-
joyed excellent health for sixty years,
I decided to break my back from a
fall simply to test your slogan,
“Here, because we care.”
I experienced your true personal
interest in my well-being. Without
exception, every person was friend-
ly, helpful and caring. I especially
commend your nursing staff. All
were obviously well-trained and
efficient. Their warmth and helpful-
What can you say to a group of
fine people who present you with
something like the Hall of Fame
award, except that The Wanderer is
proud and very grateful? He is also
proud to be a citizen of Llano —
almost a citizen, that is. He’s been
here 29 years, and in another year
should be eligible for naturalized
citizenship. You don’t just move into
a town and become a first-class
citizen at once. For the first 20 years,
you’re that new guy from over the
way.
Maebelle Dansby, last year’s Hall
of Fame winner, did a beautiful job
of presentation, and the Wanderer
didn’t have an inkling of what was
going on until he began to recognize
some familiar spots in Maebell's
resume. He thought Ross and Nell
Bauman were going pretty far out
when they asked him and Hazel to go
to the banquet as their guests, but he
didn’t realize there was method in
their madness. He’s very grateful to
those who made it possible.

This is a very special letter of
thanks from the Reese family to all of
you who have been so good to us
during our time of trial. Your
immediate and generous gifts of
clothes, blankets, linen, food and
most important, moral support, have
been a constant source of strength
we could draw on. You have turned
what could have been a very
traumatic experience into a con-
structive change which can be
handled. The building materials are
also especially appreciated. To have
extra room, as well as something
new, is just the medicine we needed.
The fire, the losses, are rarely
mentioned now.
Fawn is in love with her new crib.
With new clothes, toys, and a nice
warm room to play in, she feels life is
a series of wonderful adventures.
New carpet, bed, chest-of-drawers,
so much to say thank you for and so
few words to express our appreica-
tion. I am so grateful to have been
living in this community, so glad to
have so many good friends to pray
with us and for us and give so much
of themselves. There are too many to
name individually. You know who
you are and I promise you I will try to

Have you ever noticed in a ■
television broadcast of any event in
the Astrodome there will be camera
flashes going off all over the big
stadium, some of them as much as a
quarter of a mile from the action?
Considering the fact that the average
camera flash will only carry for 15 or
20 feet, that’s a lot of film wasted.
However, the biggest film waste The

The U.S. Congress passed a new Clean
Water Act in 1987 providing $20 billion for
upgrading sewage-treatment plants; cleaning
up our lakes, rivers and estuaries; and helping
control pollution that includes runoff from
fields, urban streets and overflowing storm
sewers.
I hope the funds are enough. They will be, if
every American will do his or her share of
helping stop pollution before it starts. No mat-

On March 8, 20 states, including
Texas will participate in what has
come to be known as the “Super
Tuesday Primary.” Both the Demo-
cratic and Republican parties are
having primary elections on this
date. Some people do not usually
vote in a primary election, preferring
to wait until the general election in
November, so that they can claim to
be “independent voters.”

the delegates to the two national
conventions will be selected by
“party voters” — Democrats and
Republicans. 75 percent of the Texas
delegates will be pledged to some
presidential candidate, based on the
vote received by that candidate on
"Super Tuesday.” The procedure
for selection of the remainder of the
delegates will start at 7:15 p.m. on
Super Tuesday at the party precinct
conventions. Only those who have
voted on March 8 will be eligible to
attend these conventions. The point

Now, let’s get local. The Republi-
cans have a 4-man race for commis-
sioner in precinct one. The Demo-
crats have two constable races in
precinct 3 and precinct 4. These local
candidates, your neighbors, deserve
your support. The way you vote in
these local races on March 8 will
determine who will be your elected
county officials in these offices for
the next four years. On December 1,
Llano County had 7,666 registered
voters. How many ballots will be
counted on March 8, and will yours
be among them?
Back to the first deadline. Your
voter registration application must
be postmarked by February 7 to be
eligible to receive a voter registra-
tion certificate in time to vote in the
March 8 primary. If you have
registered and have not received
your new white certificate, contact
the tax office now at 247-4165.

A growing number of people in Texas and
around the country are deeply concerned
about our environment and ground-water
clean up and protection.
Half of the people in the United States,
depend on ground water as their primary
source of drinking water. In more rural areas
up to/97 percent of the people use ground
water for drinking, and it is critically needed
by agriculture and industry as well. Llano uses
surface water from the Llano River.
Threats to our ground water resources may
not be as visible as a polluted lake or stream,
but they are real. Contamination includes

“If winter comes, can spring be
far behind?” That crack was written
by Sheets or Kelly, or one of the
long-haired poets. However, it’s
pretty applicable to Llano these
days. In fact, it seems from
experience of the past few wests
that when winter comes, spring map
arrive tomorrow, or vice versa.

Some of our families have ex- (
pressed concern over a bond issue
notice that was recently published in
the local newspaper. ARA Living '
Centers leases on a long term basis a 4
number of Care Inn facilities from (
the owner, a Texas-based company
called Great Southwestern Medical 3
Centers, Inc. The duration of these
leases extends well into the 1980’s. «
in order to refinance its mortgages
on the facilities, the owner seeks to
obtain bond money from the Bell
County Health Facilities Commis-
sion. As a part of the procedure of
obtaining this money, routine notices
are published in local newspapers
and notice is given to local govern-
ments.
This bond has nothing to do with
the operation of our facility. It is only
a means for the owner to obtain a **
source of the financing. ARA Living
Centers will continue to operate Care
Inn now and in the future. We look
forward to many more years of
serving our residents and this
community.
