I am writing in regard to Mr.
Virdell’s remarks in an area newspa-
per last week. Mr. Virdell said that
the track program at Llano High
School is non-existent. In 1986, there
were around seven boys out for
track; however, in 1987, in Coach

important thing the council wanted
to know was the cost. With all things
taken into consideration, the esti-

Virdell said so. He has not been seen
at one boy’s basketball game this
year. In one statement, Virdell says
the kids played their hearts out and
he said that he had to give Spivey the
credit for that, but in the next
breath, Virdell states that Spivey is
not instilling the right attitude.
The most erroneous statement of
all was that kids were forced to wear
Spivey support buttons and to attend
meetings. Has Mr. Virdell tried to
make any of today’s teenagers do
anything they are not committed to
doing? Fortunately, they have minds

Other Business
— The council called for a city
election for May 7. Aidermen who
will be completing their terms this
year are Roy Goff, Gene Russell and
Jeff Hopf. Goff and Hopf immedi-
ately announced they would be
candidates for re-election. Russell
withheld his decision. The deadline
for candidates to register for the city
election will be March 23.
— Reappointed to the zoning
board were Gary Gatliff, Ross
Bauman and Jerry Butler.
— The annual March Clean-up has
been set for March 19-26 with special
emphasis on the fact that this was
only for the residents of the city of
Llano and not any commercial
businesses. The city grants free
dumping privileges to city residents.
The offer does not include wire, tin,
refrigerators, stoves and similar
items.

acres represent a 30-1 advantage for
the city, enabling it to improve the
city warehouse and storage areas,
improve and add more baseball
diamonds and it could also include
future city development for recrea-
tional purposes or other city needs.
Buttery wrot in his proposal. “I
think it can be viewed as an
opportunity for the city to take a
sizeable step forward and possibly
create a better business climate as
well.”
Again, the council members said it
would take the offer into considera-
tion and make a decision at a later
date.

According to the council’s figures,
- it would mean raising city taxes by at
I least 30 cents per $100'valuation.
The present city taxes are a little less
than 19 cents per $100 valuation.
One of the strongest points made
for construction of the dam was the
potential increase the city would
I need, plus the fact that if all of the
I waters rights upstream were ever
honored at the same time, the Llano
River would have quit flowing about
eight times instead of the two
instances in the 1950s and 60s.
Kassell asked how long it would be
before the new dam would be filled
with silt, but Gay was unable to
answer the question, saying, "I just
don’t have any information to be able
to answer that question.”
The council thanked them for their
efforts and said they would study the
proposal more closely.
Property Swap
. Henry Buttery, owner of Buttery
Hardware, presented the council a
proposal to swap the present city
property adjacent to his property for
a little more than 59 acres, 1.6 miles
south of Llano on the east side of SH
16. This would include the present
city barn and also the north portion
of the block occupied by city hall,
which includes the present little
league baseball field.
“I don’t expect an on-the-spot
decision, but I think you should be
able to decide something before the
end of the year.”
The offer includes a payment of
$50,000 for improvements for the
new tract. Buttery said he would
most likely use the present city shed
for truck maintenance and also for
storage of items that could not be left
in the open. The additional property
would enable him to load trucks on
his own property without having to
i use city streets as he now does.
