phasized the success of the breast
screening program in Texas, stating
we would have a high incidence of
breast cancer, just as more uterine
cancer was reported after the
instigation of routine pap smears
several years ago. It is anticipated
death from breast cancer can be
reduced 70 percent as the result of
use of mamography. She also stated
the Great American Smokeout, just
completing its 11th year, has resul-
ted in greater awareness of the
danger of tobacco use, along with a
decrease in use of tobacco and an
increase of 50 percent in employers
who either do not allow smoking in
the workplace, or only allow smoking
in designated areas.
Buckner brought the group up to

marily with fund raising due to the
cancellation of the annual fall fund
raiser in 1987. The possibility of a
community-wide Cancer Crusade,
primarily to distribute educational
material, was discussed and placed
on the agenda for the next meeting
which will be held at the Badu House
at noon Wednesday, March 17. The
president appointed a committee
headed by Marilyn Winfrey with
members Darlene Birk and Joyce
Foster, who will work out a date and
details to be presented to the entire
unit at the next meeting. Various
other services rendered to Llano area
cancer patients and needed services
to be initiated in the future were
discussed.
Sara Keleher, District 7 represen-
tative, announced the District 7
Crusade Kickoff is scheduled for
March 3 in Austin. She urged
members to attend and suggested a
carpool in order that promote better
attendance from Llano. She em-
date on the first annual breast
screening project completed in 1987.
He announced that the project in
Texas prompted more than 60,000
mamograms of symptom free women
and of that number some 400 cancers
were found. This ratio figures to be
one cancer in each 105 persons
examined. Buckner further stated
that Texas law now mandates
insurance companies in this state to
cover screening mameograms. Pre-
viously most insurance companies
did not cover this service.
The president adjourned the meet-
ing after accepting the resignation of
Peggy Tatsch as service/rehabilita-
tion chairman. Mrs. Tatsch resigned
due to having to be away from home
a great deal of time. Buckner
expressed the appreciation of the
entire unit to Mrs. Tatsch for the
excellent job she has done in this
capacity, and announced a new
chairman would be appointed soon.
