thank all the friends and neighbors,
also the Mason and Pontotoc Fire
Departments for their help at the fire
on her place. Sadie was burning
trash when the fire got away from
her. She was a very luky lady as she
was burned some, but not bad.
Kenneth and Donna Bode and son
of Duncanville are at their place this
week. Donna is also visiting in
Junction with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Aubry Fife.
A large crowd attended the RSVP
meeting Wednesday. Zella Mae
Metzger was honored with a corsage
for all she has contributed to RSVP.
Zella Mae always calls everyone to
remind them of the meetings, goes
and gets the ones who do not have a
way, and gets the meals organized.
She also calls absent-minded me to
remind me that it is blood pressure-
taking day. We all appreciate Zella
Mae in her effort to do for others.

• Received a failing grades report
from Moore showing mostly passing
grades for the majority of students
with weak spots in 7th and 8th grade
, math of 21 and 24 students failing
there. Sixteen 7th graders were
failing science in the fourth six
weeks as were 14 8th grade students.
English was causing 18 9th grade
students problems as was the same
subject for 13 sophomores.
• Accepted the text book commit-
tee's report.
• Went into executive session to
discuss teachers’ contracts. (See
story elsewhere in the News.)

Moore pointed out that $1.2
million in delinquent taxes to the
school district is “serious.”
School board president George
Wentsch said, “it’s unfortunate, but
we (school board) take the rap for
raising taxes when some county
officials are not doing their jobs, it
isn’t a fair system when some pay
and others do-not.”
Other Matters
The Board:
•Approved a motion to proceed
with a lease/purchase arrangement
for ordering school buses. It was
pointed out that the state attorney
general has ruled a school district
may not call for bids for a specific
manufacturer of school buses. A
lease/purchase would allow the
district to continue to buy Blue Bird
body buses with a specific engine to
help standardize the school bus fleet
allowing for easier maintenance and
upkeep, according to Moore.

"We’ll be taking a long, hard look
at the budgeting process for the
coming school year,” Moore said.
“We can expect a budget reflecting
an increase by perhaps $300,000.”

Among those areas which call for
an increase will be three new
teachers: one for third grade, and
one at the fourth grade level plus an
aide and a teacher for high school
math/science. Three or more cafe-
teria workers will be needed for the
new cafeteria now under construc-
tion plus two or more custodians and
raises for teachers and other school
district personnel will come up for
study.
Dellnquent Taxes
Moore also pointed out that the
school district’s delinquent taxes
were beginning to pile up with a
balance of $634,445 as of February
29, 1988 for payment of current
taxes. A delinquent tax report from
the tax-assessor’s office reported
$614,565.48 delinquent prior to 1988.
The majority of this figure is
delinquencies from 1985-87.
