Saturday is a most Important election day in
the Llano Independent School District, as
citizens will go to the polls to elect three
members to this seven-member board.
In Place 1. incumbent George Wentsch Is
seeking reelection to the board with Mike
McPherson also on the ballot for the same
seat on the board.
. John Kuykendall has signed up for the Piece
5 seat on the board. He has no opposition for
this spot.
Rodney G. Hardin and Ken Sanders are
vying for Place 6.
The school district is facing a number of
problems in school budget areas, delinquent
taxes, property reappraisals, the continuing
building programs, curriculum, school atten-
dance, teacher and administrator salaries,
athletics and on and on.
WNe need to continue to have a strong,
responsible school board and the best way to
have it is for the patrons of the district to get
out and show their support by voting this
Saturday.
Llanoans would not care for either in
hunting or fishing.

At the April 5 meeting, Carl, as
spokesman for his group, supported
by the chamber of commerce, stated
they were petitioning for Kingsland
to become a class B city. As a class B
city, it would immediately have the
power to levy a 25 cents per $100
property tax. No action by the voters
here.
Now the next step. A class B city,
with a population of more than 600
inhabitants, can by the vote of the
council only, become a class A city.
As such, it would have a high level of
freedom of operations. The city
council would have the power to pass

Also coming in for critictom was a
proposal for changing trotline tags
every 10 days instead of 90 days. Of
course, 1 the ■ 10-day rule would •
probably make sure that more
trotlines would be sold to replace
those yanked out of the lake.
One other comment passed on to
me was that the new rules would do
more to make lawbreakers out of
most of the sportsmen, adding,
"That would give the game wardens
more opportunity to arrest people
and add more money to the coffers.”
If the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department to really interested in
the feelings of the people, then let’s
see if they will change their May 12
meeting from Austin to Uano. You •
can be sure that won’t happen
because, according to them, they are
interested in what to best for the deer
and fish. The people and their
opinions, based on personal experi-
ence, mean very little to them. How
sad.

What did Llanoans say at Freder-

number of deer they think should be

True, there may be a few
landowners willing to have a little

more hunters’ dollars, but the deer
aren’t dumb by any means. It
doesn’t take them long to pay more
than the ususal attention and for the

come up with some numbers we
readily understand. If we have a
house and lot with a $50,000
valuation, our tax could be $750. If
the value was $100,000, the tax could
be $1,500. Anyone owning lake front
property or business property along
Highway 1431, knows these valua-
tions are realistic.
This is not to imply that this will
happen, nor do I want to use scare
tactics or intimidate anyone; only to
point out what could happen once
incorporated.
I would be curious to know how
many of the chamber members or
proponents of incorporation live
within the area that would be subject
to this possible taxation. We know
the residence of their spokesman
would be excluded.
Statements made in this and other
letters are substantiated by pam-
phlets on incorporation from the
Texas Municipal League and the
Texas Department of Community
Affairs. The two publications stress
they are intended only as a guide,
and legal council is advised if a
corporation to approved. They are
both available to anyone on request.
More quotes sfrom the meeting by
the spokesman of the “for group.”
“The whole purpose of incorporation
is to adopt sub-division and zoning
ordinances to protect property val-
ues. Property values are going down
in the area because of lack of
building standards." This may have
some degree of accuracy, but the
truth of the matter to that property
values have dropped in every
municipality in the “oil patch”
section of our country, due to
economic conditions.
