SUNRISE BEACH — Contrary to
several recent complaints, there is
no campaign to destroy our bluebon-
nets or reduce the number of
wildflowers in our community. Mo-
wing of the roadways was started
earlier this year than in past years,
but even the few straggly bluebon-
nets have been left in place if seed
pods were visible or being devel-
oped. Unfortunately, we just exper-
ienced a year with only five percent
of the normal wildflower display.
Fortunately, seeds that didn’t sprout
because of insufficient rain between
October and February will have
another chance next year, if Mother
Nature decides to favor us with the
necessary moisture. We will all miss
the loss of a 1988 seed crop, but the
cause isn’t early mowing.
