young men stayed on as firemen. A
ladies auxiliary was formed in the
mid 1940s. These ladies would often
take refreshments to their husbands
while they were fighting fires.
Armour Barnett and Faye Swenson
were charter members.
In 1954, another new fire truck
was purchased. It was a 1954 Ford
with a Simms body. This truck was
the first one for Llano that had an
enclosed cab. It has a 500 gpm pump
as well as a 500 gallon booster tank
Roof and wall ladders were carried
on this truck. The big water tanks
were a big help when responding to
rural fires.
During this period of time, the
Llano volunteers responded to fires
all over the county. Alarms were
answered in the Tow, Kingsland,
and other lake areas. When other
towns needed help, Llano would
send help. This practice is still
followed today.
A new system ws installed in Llano
in the 1960s to alert firemen. When
the fire emergency was called, it
rang all of the firemen’s telephones.
The central alarm siren was also
turned on.
In the 1960s, Llano County and the
Hill Country Livestock Raisers Asso-
future, the district would be included
in the decision-making process.
— The date of Saturday, June 4
was set for a wet-dry off-premises
sale of alcoholic beverages in
Precinct 2.
In Llano County Commissioner and
Justice Precincts now have identical
boundaries. Just last month, the
voters in Commissioner Precinct 3
(Kingsland) voted to keep the area
dry by a 525-390 margin.
through October before changes
were made.
She proposed separate card cata-
log files for Kingsland, Greenwood
Exchange and Llano. She has
San Antonio by Simms. This new
truck was also white in color and
built in Virginia by the Grumman Co.
This truck came equipped with a
bigger pump and booster tank. Also,
it has built-in storage compartments
where extra equipment is kept.
In 1986, an old butane truck was
purchased and converted by the
members into a water tanker. This
tanker is used to provide extra water
for rural house and grass fires.
In 1987, the Llano Volunteer Fire
Department got into the rescue
business. A fund-raising drive was
started, along with some other
organizations in the county. In
six-weeks time, enough money was
raised to purchase a Hurst rescue
tool. This tool is known as the “Jaws
of Life.” A used ambulance was
acquired from the county to carry the
tool, as well as other rescue gear.
The jaws of life has been in service
about one year. Three rescues have
been made with it. So, you can say
that the fire department does more
than fight fires.
The Fire Department averages a
call every three days. These calls last
anywhere from one hour to four
hours. If it is a large grass fire, it
may be days.

with tanks and pumps in the beds.
These trucks were used to fight
grass and brush fires. They were
housed in a building by the county
shed and were manned by members
of the fire department.
In 1973 a new 1973 Chevrolet truck
with a Simms body was purchased.
This truck had a five-hundred gpm
pump with a 500 gallon booster tank.
Tradition was broken with the
purchase of this 1973 fire truck. It
was not painted the traditional red,
but white was the new color.
Also, more room was needed as the
fire department outgrew its building.
While the new truck was on order, a
new building with six bays and a
meeting room were built at the
present site on West Main Street.
The grass-fighting trucks were
placed in here, along with the
pumpers.
In 1976, fund-raising barbecues
began. This has become an annual
event. Funds from these events have
bought two-way radio equipment,
also fire hoses, nozzles, self-con-
tained breathing apparatus and
other much-needed equipment.
Another tradition was broken in
1984, because previously all of
