would like to quit, and 23 percent
were trying to quit at the time of the
survey.
According to Stotts, "The results of
this survey will allow the American
Cancer Society to better design
programs and materials for nurses so
that we can help prevent them from
smoking, or at the least help them to
quit. It will also help nurses become
better positive role models for their
community."

AUSTIN — The rate of smoking
among nurses is continuing to drop,
according to the findings of an
American Cancer Society (ACS)-
sponsored survey of Texas nurses.
According to the survey results, 22
percent of Texas nurses currently
smoke. Comparable studies over the
past five years have shown rates of
24-28 percent.
Ironically, it appears most nurses
begin smoking during nursing
school. Survey findings indicate 60
percent of Texas nurses begin
smoking at age 18 or later. This is a
reverse of the typical pattern, which
finds two-thirds of all smokers
beginning the habit before age 18.
The survey was designed and
administered by Nancy Burns, R.N.,
PhD, University of Texas at Arling-
ton, Allen Henderson, PhD, Texas
Weslyan College and Craig Stotts,
RN, Dr. P.H. University of Texas
Medical Branch at Galveston. It was
funded by the ACS Texas Division.
"This survey is the largest and
most comprehensive survey ever
conducted with .nurses regarding
smoking," Burns said.
Surveys were returned from 2,548
nurses throughout the state in the
spring of 1986.
Other highlights of the study:
•Male nurses, though few in
number, are more likely to be
smokers than female nurses or other
health care professionals of either
gender. Thirty-one percent of male
nurses in Texas smoke. THis com-
pares to a 41 percent male nurse
smoking rate reported from national
studies. Recent studies indicate only
16.7 percent of physicians nation-
wide smoke, as do 14.1 percent of
dentists.
• White and Hispanic nurses are
more likely to be smokers than black
or other ethnic group nurses.
• Smoking is strongly related to
work specialties. Nurses in psychia-
try and management are much more
likely to be smokers — 30 percent
and 27 percent, respectively — than
nurses who work in continuing
