Three Houston women sustained
injuries in a one-car accident that
happened Saturday, August 6 about
9:40 p.m. 16 miles southeast of Llano
on SH 71.
Driving a 1983 Honda Civic was
Rosie Maldonado, 27, who was
traveling west when the car started
to go off the right side of the road.
Quite a few people noticed Mon-
day that if you put down the calendar
date for August 8, 1988 in all
numerals, like some people do, you
would have the sequence of 8/8/88.
Llano's Dutch Swenson came up with
a few extra 8s when he received a bill
for car repairs from Ratliff Auto
Company. The bill was dated 8/8/88
and the amount owed was $88.88.
Swenson followed up by paying the
bill in person. His check was also
dated 8/8/88; amount paid, $88.88
and when he handed the check to the
cahsier, she noted the time as being
88 minutes past 8 a.m.
When will another sequence of
numbers like this occur again? It will
be a while before September 9, 1999
arrives and you can have a sequence
of all 9s — 9/9/99.

The voters of Llano County
overwhelmingly approved $1 million
in general obligation bonds for
additions and improvements to Llano
Memorial Hospital. The vote was
1,338 to 438. They also approved
$375,000 in bonds for construction of
a new Llano County Library, but the
margin was much doser — 1,024 to
775.

Heavy damage to a multiple
overhead truss bridge across the
Colorado River and a portion of inks
Lake has resulted in the closing of
the bridge to all truck traffic with
only one-way crossing of motor
vehicles for at least a month while
repairs are being made. Employees
of the Llano County office of the
State Department of Highways and
Public Transportation have been
pressed into around the dock service
directing traffic and a 35-mile detour
has been established for all truck and
mobile home traffic.
Cause of the accident was believed
to be the shifting of a lost of new
flatbed trailers built by Loadcraft at
Brady and-stacked on two trailers
pulled by a GMC tractor being
driven by Paul Benavidies, 60, of
Menard. The accident occured on SH

Benavidies was not injured.
According to DPS Trooper Kermit
Robinson, Benavides was traveling
east pulling two loaded trailers. He
passed under the first two trusses
unaware that the load on the second
trailer had come loose and was
swinging toward the vertical bridge
supports. Hitting the third truss
apparently upended one of the new
trailers which slammed into the
crossmember of the fourth truss
ripping the rest of the load loose,
bending and popping rivets out of
girders and gouging 'chunks of
pavement in the floor of the bridge.
Fortunately, there was not any
other traffic on the bridge. Pieces of
some of the new trailers reportedly
fell off of the bridge and into the

in their July meeting, commis-
sioners voted not to renew a lease for
county commons land where the
Winkel store is located, but which
has been vacated for some time. A
letter to theWinkel family advising
them of the action set a time limit for
them to remove any of their property
and apparently was not well re-
ceived. . The word used was “incen-
sed.”
Commissioners were reminded
that the old lease contract had a
10-year renewal option and that the
Winkels intended to exercise that
option especially if the library bond
issue failed. Commissioner Ross
Bauman reportedly discussed the
situation with Winkel to resolve the
problem. Bauman followed up with a
motion to rescind the letter and take
no further action until the election
results are canvassed.

approaches to the bridge for some
time as debris was removed.
State Highway supervisor for Llano
County, Gordon Hefner, said the
department would immediately ins-
titute emergency procedures to get
the bridge repaired and back in full
use.
“First, they will have to test and
stabilize the toad-bearing compres-
sion and tension rods,” Hefner
explained. "Then they can take out
the damaged sections and replace
them.”
