Looking for the perfect winter
fantasy? Imagine being a snowflake
examiner for the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration’s
weather forecasting lab. National
Wildlife magazine reports that last
winter the lab dispatched some 40
volunteers with hand-held micro-
scopes to study the size and shape of
snowflakes as they fell.
Llano’s Wade Hutto and Scott
Jones teamed up to win first place in
the championship flight of the fifth
annual Wayne Bowden Memorial
Golf Tournament held last Saturday
and Sunday at Llano Golf Club. They
shot a two-day total 120.
Coming in second in the champion-
ship flight was the team of Brent
Barclay and Doug Northcutt of San
Marcos who shot 121. Third place in
the flight was won by Inks Lake
residents Scott Tyson and Jiggs
Thurman with a 125.
First flight winners with a 131 was
the team of Richard Rabb of Llano
and Dennis Raesner of Llano and
Austin. Second place went to Mike
the rover duties with Laura and both
did a fine job.
Coach Nancy Etheredge stated
that, “Luke and I would like to
express our appreciation for the
girls’ seriousness and dedication to
the team. Every girl was at every
practice and every game. We feel
that Kingsland girls made a real
contribution to our AU Star team.”
The Kingsland League is very
grateful for the help and cooperation
of these coaches, especially in
providing the informtion for this
article and for coming to Kingsland
for practices.
All interested parties are reminded
that the league board will meet
Thursday, August 11, 7 p.m., at
KMUD office. Important matters for
consideration are the constitution
and by-laws, and nomination of
officers for the coming year.

hit (H) is only when the ball is
sufficiently hit so that no play is
possible on any runner. The three
girls who got hits showed the
foilwing stats: Nicki Coleman - 11
AB, 2 hits, .182ba; Sara Comerford -
12 ab, 5 hits, .417 ba; Shawna Roark
- 7 ab, 2 hits, .286 BA.
Nicki was starting catcher and
lead-off batter in all four games and
was commended for good attitude
and maximum effort by her coaches.

Hunting prospects are good for
mourning dove seasons beginning
this September, but less rosy for
white-winged doves in the Rio
Grande Valley, Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department officials said.
Ron George, dove program leader,
said recent call-count surveys indi-
cated mourning dove breeding pop-
ulations in Texas are about 10
percent above last year’s survey
totals, and some 13 percent above
the long-term average.
The highest counts occurred in the
Rolling Plains region of North
Central Texas, followed by the South
Texas Plains and the Gulf Prairies
and Marshes. Good populations also
exist in the Post Oak Savannah, the
Blackland Prairie and Cross Timbers
regions, George said.
Relatively high mourning dove
populations and dry weather are a
good combination for hunters, Geor-
ge said. “Waterhole hunting should
be good this year if the dry weather

The Llano County girls softball
team played four games in a double
elimination series finishing with a
2-2 record, setting a Llano record for
their league division. Five girls from
Kingsland helped to make that
possible. Coach Nancy Etheredge
felt that the girls "played better in
All Star games than during the
regular season,” showing good
concentration under pressure.
