There has been an increased
interest in prescribed burning as a
method of brush management.
Over the state this past year,
thousands of acres burned as a result
of accident or arson. Ranchers who
would like to suppress brush with
fire need to make plans well in
advance. Prescribed burns are car-
ried out during the winter under
fairly strict monitoring of tempera-
ture, humidity and wind speed. In
addition, a good supply of fuel must
be available to obtain the desired
results.
In reviewing some of the prescribed
burns over the state that have
resulted in accidental fires, some of
the causes are as follows:
Inexperienced personnel often are
unfamiliar with fire behavior and the
amount of available fuel. In many
instances, inadequate backup equip-
ment or equipment in poor working
order were found. Many ranchers
also had poor communication both
with neighbors and local authorities,
particularly fire departments. Many
burns were conducted without wea-
ther monitoring equipment and
weather forecasts.
Ranchers who are interested in
burning this winter should start
planning early. Contact the local SCS
or Extension Office for assistance. If
enough interest is shown, a work-
shop could be planned for this fall on
techniques of prescribed burning.
