Water quality in the Colorado River at Web-
berville, Bastrop and La Grange was poor due to
elevated nutrient levels. At Columbus, Wharton
and Bay City, high levels of nutrients (although
lower than upstream) resulted in fair ratings. The
Colorado River at Pleasant Valley Road is not
recommended for contact recreation according to
EPA guidelines because the fecal coliform bac-
terig at this site exceeds the limit.
Samples were collected August 23, 1988.

The Kingsland Arts and Crafts
club met August 24 at the Village
Club House for a luncheon. Lorraine
Matlock, Margaret Haworth and
Cozette Burgess hosted the affair
which was attended by many and
enjoyed by all.
For thoae of you attending the
opening of the new Lake Buchanan
State Bank branch, you will probably
recognize some of the art work on
display (at the request of bank
officials.) The artists whose paint-
ings were chosen are Lee Henley,
Alene Stewart, Betty Rhodes and
Elaine Peterson.
Several of our club members have
been busy this week adding shutters
to the front of the building. This
really looks nice and we want to
especially thank Margaret Haworth,
who donated money for the lumber;
Jim Kimbrow, Ed Bullock, Nancy
and Porter Burrets, who did the

lands,” Sweeten said.
“Types of materials that may be
considered pollutants transported in
rainfall runoff include nutrients such
as nitrogen and phosphorus, pesti-
cides, organic matter such as animal
wastes, heavy metals and other
chemicals,” Sweeten said.
’’When identified, NPS water
pollution can be reduced by planning
and management techniques, inclu-
ding application of so-called best
management practices to the land,”
he said.
The Texas Agricultural Extension
Service is among agencies and
organizations involved in helping
solve nonpoint source pollution
through educational programs, de-
monstrations and technical assis-
tance and soil snd water testing.
Sweeten said that every state has
developed an assessment and a
management strategy recently for
nonpoint sources of water pollution.
These reports are being sent to the
U.S. Environmental Protection A-
gency, according to deadlines in the
1987 Federal Clean Water Act.

COLLEGE STATION — Many
current headlines mention the issue
of “nonpoint source pollution” of
Texas water.
Just what is nonpoint source
pollution and why is it important to
Texas and regional agriculture?
Dr. John M. Sweeten, agricultural
engineer with the Texas Agricultural
Extension Service, said that a
nonpoint source (NPS) can be
defined as an “area that contributes
uncontrolled rainfall runoff in which
water contaminants are conveyed
through diffuse drainage pathways
to streams, reservoirs or groundwa-
Sweeten said this type of pollution
usually is not traceable to a single
identifiable source.

ces are urban streets and parking
